How to Interpret the Part of Fortune

spirit-of-the-universe

The Part of Fortune shows where you find your greatest joy and happiness in life. It’s one of the Arabic Parts or Lots and is calculated using the positions of the Sun, Moon and Ascendant in your horoscope.

In this post we’ll look at the nature of the Part of Fortune and what it represents, and deal with how to calculate it in another post.

The Sun, Moon and Ascendant are the three most important points in your horoscope. The Sun represents your core self, how you see yourself consciously and how you want to shine. The Moon is the emotional self, the embodied soul and unconscious instinctive sense of being. Both the Sun and the Moon are expressed through the Ascendant, which is how you present yourself to the world through your persona and physical body. When these three are working in harmony and at their highest expression, the Part of Fortune comes into play.

The Part of Fortune represents the place in your horoscope where this balance between the Sun, Moon and Ascendant can be expressed most easily. It shows where you can attune to your environment in a way that brings success, but this depends on how you use the energies of your Sun, Moon and Ascendant. If they’re not in balance or expressed negatively, the Part of Fortune becomes more a Part of Misfortune.

The position of your Part of Fortune shows where you feel most at home and rooted in the centre of your being. It represents an inner sense of abundance and joy and isn’t necessarily dependant on external circumstances. Outer harmony comes from inner harmony, so integrating your Sun, Moon and Ascendant will help you achieve inner harmony and this will reveal your innate talents and where you’ll find joy and abundance in your life. This usually takes a while to achieve, so the Part of Fortune will probably work better after mid-life, or if you make a real effort to grow into wholeness.

The Part of Fortune represents success and the pot of gold at the end of your personal rainbow. It can help your dreams to come true, but this involves deliberate intent. Riches and abundance won’t necessarily fall into your lap. It shows where you know you mustn’t compromise your ideals, and for this you need self-awareness.

When you’re in harmony with your world (inside and out), the Part of Fortune brings prosperity and good health. Its sign and house position show where you can find success and joy by integrating the qualities of your personality. This integration means you’ll be operating from your Higher Self and this can endow your personality with charisma.

“And because this soli-lunar relationship is actually the foundation for the elusive and capricious factor which is named ‘personality’ (the ‘It’ of movie stars, lovers and dictators!), the Part of Fortune is the most characteristic indication of the type of ‘personality’ which an individual may succeed in developing and projecting.” – Dane Rudhyar, The Lunation Cycle

Part of Impersonal Consciousness

Because the Part of Fortune is a point of harmony it’s important that the point opposite it isn’t expressed negativity. If this happens the Part of Fortune can’t function positively. To avoid this problem you need to learn how to express the most positive qualities of the sign and house opposite to your Part of Fortune.

This means learning to take a more impersonal approach towards the qualities, circumstances and events that are linked with the house and sign opposite. In Joy and the Part of Fortune, Martin Schulman calls this point the Part of Impersonal Consciousness or the IC (a bit confusing since it uses the same abbreviation as the point at the bottom of the horoscope, the I.C.).

The qualities and events associated with the Part of Impersonal Consciousness can distract you from the path that will bring you the greatest joy. To deal with this, you’ll need to learn to take a positive approach to anything that opposes your happiness or peace of mind. This means stepping into your impersonal or Higher Self and letting go of anything you’re not personally responsible for.

“If each individual seeks his joy by using the Sun, Moon and Ascendant in the most positive ways, while trying not to offend, hurt or create negativity with the people and circumstances represented by the sign and house opposing his Part of Fortune, it becomes obvious that in the eyes of God, the world experiences positive evolution. If, on the other hand, each individual seeks joy through the most positive harmonious use of his Sun, Moon and Ascendant but fails to yield to people, circumstances and events symbolised by the house and sign opposing his Part of Fortune, then through the eyes of God, the world experiences chaos.” – Martin Schulman

Part of Fortune Interpretation

pofThe sign and house position of your Part of Fortune show where you’ll find your greatest joy and success in life. Some say the house position is more important and this shows what you’re truly interested in and where you hope to find fulfilment. Robert Hand says the sign placement of the Part of Fortune along with its ruler gives a good indication of your profession, along with the 10th house of your horoscope. The social role your occupation fulfils can be seen in the sign ten signs along from the Part of Fortune, while the 11th sign along shows how you can earn money, and how well.

The following indicate qualities and areas where you have natural talents and abilities, and may show your vocation and career. These are the keys to your success and joy in life:

  1. Sign and house placement of the Part of Fortune
  2. Planets or points conjunct or opposite the Part of Fortune
  3. Ruling planet of the sign in which the Part of Fortune is placed, and that planet’s house position
  4. Any other planets or points in the same sign as the Part of Fortune even if they’re not conjunct

The sign and house placement show qualities that you should be able to express easily – innate abilities and talents, as well as indications of your vocation and career, and how you can gain worldly success, greater well-being and improved health. However, if your Part of Fortune is afflicted by difficult aspects, you may have a harder time achieving your dreams – but it’s not impossible!

  1. Hi Jessica,

Thank you for your insightful posts. Do you have any idea what it means when POF is exactly conjunct the North Node? I have my North Node and POF both at 0 degrees Capricorn in the first house (not Cap rising though).

    Many thanks! 🙂

    1. Hi Stephanie – glad you liked the posts. I’m not sure about POF conjunct the north node, only that your potential joy/fortune would be connected somehow to your karma. There are different interpretations of the nodes depending on which system you use – it’s something I need to look into more. Sorry I can’t be of more help!

  2. Hi Jessica,

My POF is the same degree as my lilith. It’s the last in a stellium of planets in my 2nd house, all in cancer (lilith is conjunct mars, mars is conjunct mercury).

Common literature naturally asserts that POF in my 2nd would indicate good fortune with money. This couldn’t be further from the truth for me.

I can believe that my lilith being exactly on my POF has helped me survive. That lilith conjunct mars (exactly on my POF) has given me the grit to keep going, even when I’ve felt like I couldn’t.

I guess I’m commenting because despite “surviving”… that’s all I ever seem to do. I work hard and I don’t give in. But I worry I will never receive any fortune (not necessarily financially – just stability/happiness).

Sorry for a sad comment. But do you have any insights into POF that could help me use these aspects to improve my life? For years I have survived but never thrived.

    1. Hi Linnea – Read this post, if you haven’t already: https://jessicadavidson.co.uk/2016/04/14/part-of-fortune-in-2nd-house/

Also, the POF doesn’t drop goodies into your lap without effort and is more about how the Sun, Moon and Ascendent work together, or not. As I said in this post, it can take a while to come to a deeper understanding of yourself so that will influence how you experience the POF. Don’t despair though! With the POF in the 2nd house it’s more about discovering your true values and finding deep inner security, and that takes time.

  3. Hi Jessica,
I have my POF in Capricorn 1st house (but I am Sagittarius rising) conjunct both my Uranus (2) and Neptune (0) (they are the strongest planets in my chart, and the 1st house is the the strongest house), could you give me a little insight as to what this might mean? There isn’t a lot of information on the POF online. Any insight would be greatly appreciated! 🙂

    1. Hi Caitlin – not sure how much I can help – I’m not a professional astrologer so my guess is probably as good as yours 😉

You’ve probably looked at these already: POF in Capricorn and POF in 1st house. Other than that, it really depends on how you work with your Sun, Moon, and Ascendant as it says in the post.

It’s hard to predict how the Uranus and Neptune conjunction to your Ascendant would influence the POF – it’s really a case of looking at yourself and your life to see how the archetypes play themselves out. Uranus and Neptune are both transpersonal planets so they’re going to be plugging you directly into the collective consciousness and that will come out in how you present yourself to the world. Uranus will make things unpredictable, exciting and disruptive, while Neptune will tend to dissolve things and make them more defuse and confused. Very hard to predict!

It’s best not to take any one placement in the horoscope and try to interpret it on its own because it doesn’t really work like that. They’re all part of one system and the archetypes can work themselves out on so many different levels so they all influence and moderate each other. Unfortunately, I’m not equipped to untangle it all for you. Best of luck! 🙂

  4. Hi Jessica!
My PoF is in my 10th house, in 25 degrees taurus. It conjuncts my mars, sextiles my sun in the 8th house in 25 degrees pisces and trines my chiron in 6th house in 24 degrees capricorn. some other stuff that are in my 10th house is my venus, true node and north node. I tried to get information about these and interpret this myself but it seems that PoF isn’t really famous :/ especially with aspects that are not opposite or conjunct PoF :/ with that said, can you help me by letting me know what all this means? thank you !

    1. There’s a lot to interpret there and the rest of your chart would need to be taken into account too. The POF doesn’t work like a planet because it’s calculated using the sun, moon and ascendant, so how it manifests depends on how you express those parts of yourself. In your case, the 10th house is obviously a big focal point so it’ll be important for you to develop a career or vocation that allows you to express the best of who you are. The aspects to your POF look mostly helpful, being a sextile and a trine. But I think you’ll need to see a professional astrologer to unpack the whole thing…

  5. Hi Jessica,
My son’s POF sits on his MC with 2 degrees apart in 9th house and trines his saturn (6th) sextiles his mercury(12th) squares his neptune (1st) not exact but in 3 degrees. How will it effect his career and is he lucky on the career front ?

    1. The POF is tricky to interpret because it depends on how you express your sun, moon, and ascendant. So your son will need to manifest the highest qualities of those parts of himself first – and that can take a lifetime to master! – and then the aspects to the POF will either help or hinder. Presumably the aspects to his POF are also aspecting the MC, so I’d look at how those manifest before worrying about the POF itself.

  6. hi jessica,
if there is a square pof and chiron, is this show an obstacle for achieving the qualities of POF? 😦

    1. Hi gulnur. Aspects to the Part of Fortune will either help or hinder, depending on the nature of the aspect. So a square would create some tension but it also forces you to act to relieve the tension. It seems like a bad thing, but it’s actually quite useful if you follow the lesson. With Chiron square the Part of Fortune there may be wounds you need to heal before you can make the most of your POF placement. Don’t see it as an obstacle – see it as an opportunity to heal!

      Hope this helps.
