Saturn Transits to the Ascendant

When Saturn transits the Ascendant the need for security and achievement influences how you project yourself towards others and get things started. Saturn represents the structures and limitations of your life, and what you need to do in order to be true to yourself and build the life you want.

When Saturn transits the Ascendant it brings your attention to how you go about achieving your goals and reveals whether your relationships are supporting you or not. You have certain patterns of behaviour and habits that form your persona, and these will either assist you in moving forward in life, or hold you back, depending on how true you have been to yourself. Any problems here will also affect your relationships because when Saturn transits the ascendant, it also transits the descendant, the point of awareness of others.

When Saturn moves over your ascendant and into the first house it crystallises your persona and how you appear to others. This forces you to be true to who you really are, to walk your talk and put your money where your mouth is. If you’re not true to yourself, you may encounter obstacles or problems whenever you try to start anything or project yourself out into the world.

You may start to take yourself more seriously and do things that you really believe in, that reflect the real you. It’s an opportunity to grow up and act in a more mature way, or to rebuild yourself and become more like you feel you should be.

You might change your appearance or your overall attitude to life, and your goals might change to reflect this. As you come back to yourself, you may want to make changes to your relationships and/or your job. You might get married, or divorced, or become a parent for the first time, or perhaps retire from work, or get more responsibility in your job. Almost anything is possible, and it really depends on how you have been living up to this point. Whatever the changes are, they tend to be serious and important, and will have a long-term effect on the structure of your life.

(Personal note: I began to study astrology when Saturn crossed my Ascendant back in 1992. My hair also started to go grey, although I was only 22.)

The hard angles of Saturn to your ascendant – square and opposition – can cause problems if you haven’t been true to yourself in the years before the transit. If you’ve been irresponsible or have been avoiding the things you need to do, this transit can force you to take stock and become more mature in your approach.

If you’ve been holding on the past or avoiding change, Saturn could make your life feel pretty uncomfortable until you’re willing to do what’s necessary to move on. You might run into unforeseen difficulties and failures, brick walls and obstacles that suddenly appear in your path and force you to slow down and think about what you’re doing. If this happens, ask yourself what you need to learn from the situation. It might be that an obstacle doesn’t mean you’re doing the wrong thing – you might just need to change your approach.

Possibilities with Saturn transiting the Ascendant:
  • Discipline and productivity
  • Working hard to achieve ambitions
  • Increased responsibilities
  • Re-evaluating goals and relationships
  • Professional makeover
Watch out for:
  • Feeling isolated and alone
  • Lack of support from others
  • Ending unsatisfying relationships
  • Severing ties and changing direction

When Saturn transits your ascendant it’s a time when you can find out what other people think of you (not necessarily a bad thing!) and how effective your relationships are. You’ll probably feel quite serious and disciplined, but you can achieve a lot if you know what you want and are willing to work hard. You’re only likely to have problems if you’ve wandered down the wrong path. If so, Saturn will endeavour to bring you back onto the right path, either by forcing you to face up to your responsibilities internally, or through challenges from other people.

While the hard angles will test your relationships and goals, the harmonious transits – sextile and trine – are about consolidating the things in your life that work. These transits are useful for establishing positive habits that support your ambitions and relationships, or for improving your health, through an exercise regime, for example. Even with the hard angles, it’s an opportunity to think about the kind of person you want to be and to make the necessary changes to the structures in your life so you can grow into the person you’re meant to be.

  2. Jessica- thank you so much for doing this! It’s good to have somebody who can advise people on what’s really going on. I’ve calculated my secondary directions with astrodienst. It looks like next year transiting Saturn and my progressed Saturn are going to be conjuncting my progressed ascendant. What in the world can I do and should I do?

    1. This doesn’t necessarily mean bad things will happen. When progressions and transits line up like that it means you’ve reached an important turning point in your life. The best thing is to see it as a new beginning or an opportunity to remake yourself and start again in some way. Take a look at what works in your life, and what doesn’t, and make a plan to change things for the better. Good luck!

  3. Happening right now; hoping my great mood continues though after Jupiter has just transited my Ascendant.
I feel that after a year plus of these two in my 12th house I have done all the spiritual work in order to reap the benefits now.

    1. Me too, Peter! Jupiter is sitting on my Ascendant right now and Saturn is closing in.

It’ll be interesting to see how the two planets interact in your life. But remember: mood is largely a choice – you can use your spiritual practice to maintain your positive focus. As long as you don’t short change Saturn by getting lazy, you should be fine.

      1. Hi Jessica. My name is Jason. I liked your teaching. I too have an Aquarius Ascendant…7 degrees. I’ve become a lot stricter and stern with my son ever since Saturn entered my 1st. I’ve really become very authoritarian with him!. But actually as he has ADHD and autism I feel he does need the limits and boundaries I’m imposing on him now…even though he hates me for this change of attitude I’m expressing! Lol. Also…I’m in the process of possibly joining the London Met police…very Saturn based! Lol… It’s all fate and destiny and no escaping it. All we can do is choose how to respond and react to the events and experiences which have been mapped out by our souls before coming here. It’s all a script!. How’s your Saturn transit? Saturn is very happy in Aquarius. All the Best….Jason.🙏👍😊

      2. Thanks Jessica,
Asc 6 Aq, Saturn 29 Aq.
Saturn’s second, and final, transit over my Ascendant has been very challenging.
After a great end to 2020, Jupiter’s transit in my first house, Saturn has been a hard taskmaster.
Have found stressors coming from everywhere.
Longterm business relationships all ending at once and things I’ve owned for years if not decades are also breaking as well as situations endings and seeing the worse side of some people.
Sure all of this is to be expected over time but it all happened at once when Saturn was exact at 6 degrees over my Ascendant in the last two months.
Thankfully moving on now before my second Saturn return at 29 Aq, first house.
I have realised that all these endings are about bringing in new situations and people or solidifying those that survived.
Also noticed that this transit – though raising my stress levels to the max – is actually about getting rid of stress, people and things.
When I analysed each of the endings I found that generally many of them came with a burden, which I had either not noticed or had become too used to doing.
Jupiter, the ruler of my Sun, close by is also trying to keep a positive outlook.

        1. Glad you found this helpful, Peter, and thanks for sharing your experiences. It’s great that you’re taking the lessons from the old taskmaster and turning them into positives – he will be pleased!
