Saturn Transits: 7th House

When Saturn transits the Seventh House the need for security and achievement influences your one-to-one relationships. The descendant (cusp of the 7th house) is the point of awareness of others and when Saturn enters this house all the self-discovery of the previous six houses will be tested in the social arena.

When Saturn enters the 7th house you must reconcile and balance your needs, goals, and habits, with those of the people closest to you. This is the house of relationships, but not just marriage or intimate partners; it also refers to any significant relationship where you work together on the basis of mutual commitment, for example with therapists, lawyers, agents, or editors.

All your relationships will be tested now, but it’s most likely to affect your closest or most significant partnership or marriage. Saturn makes you more aware of your relationship needs, limitations, and duties, and whether you’re living up to them. You’re likely to take your relationships more seriously and if you’ve been taking others for granted, or a relationship isn’t giving you what you need, you’ll have to face up to that now.

Saturn brings you down to earth and forces you to take responsibility for being practical and realistic in your relationships, especially those that have a significant impact on your life and identity. If you’re expecting too much from others, or you’re not delivering the goods, or a partnership just isn’t workable, you’ll need to be as objective as possible to determine the best way forward.

You may feel more detached and reserved towards others and this could cause problems in your relationships. You might feel restricted or inhibited, which could reflect fears that exist in you that you’re projecting onto the other person, or you may have genuinely outgrown the relationship. You may need to withdraw for a while to work out what you need.

This transit can be a testing time and your relationships may feel stressful and difficult. You’ll need to examine them to see if they’re realistic and whether they’re a true reflection of who you have become, and are becoming. Strong relationships will get stronger as a result of this testing process. Only relationships that aren’t based on something real and sustainable will fail the test and fall apart. It depends on how willing you are to be honest with yourself and others, and whether you make the effort to build authentic relationships that reflect the real you.

A relationship may end now, but it may also just need to be transformed through a new approach. The descendant and 7th house signify parts of yourself that get lost in the unconscious and that you project onto others. These may include qualities you look for in a partner and tend to idealise, as well as fears and doubts. You may need to take back your projections and take responsibility for being you – the whole of you – you can’t expect your partner to carry the burden of your unconscious for you.

Saturn will help with this process and encourage you to balance your need for independence with the needs of others. You’ll need to distinguish between mere duty and a genuine desire to meet the other person halfway. You may need to define yourself more clearly as an individual, but you can be true to yourself and still be in a relationship if it’s flexible enough and allows both partners to grow.

The ideal relationship involves the meeting of two whole individuals who come together through genuine love rather than the need to feel completed by the other. This isn’t easy to achieve and you’ll never get the balance perfectly right, but if you go too far out of balance, Saturn will force you confront reality. Whatever the state of your relationships, they must be based in reality, not fantasy or idealism.

Possibilities with Saturn transiting the 7th:
  • Marriage or making a commitment
  • Ending a failed relationship
  • Establishing a business partnership
  • Meeting the expectations of others
  • Recognition for your skills and talents
Watch out for:
  • Hanging on to an unhealthy relationship
  • Divorce
  • Isolation and withdrawal
  • Avoidance of confrontation

This transit isn’t just about relationships; it’s also about coming to terms with the world and its demands on you as an individual. If you hold back and don’t test your new found self-knowledge and skills in the world by sharing what you know, it can cause blockages and difficulties.

Saturn encourages you to put your gifts, talents, and interests to the test so you can see what works and challenge yourself to become all that you can be. You can only do that by interacting with others and risking possible criticism or failure. If you don’t do this you may get stuck in a kind of arrested development and will struggle to keep moving forward.

But if you do the necessary work, this transit can also mark a time of wider public and social participation, and you may begin to get recognition for your skills and abilities. It’s a time to shine and to work hard in preparation for Saturn’s climb to the top of your chart at the Midheaven.

(Personal note: when Saturn was in my 7th, and conjunct my Sun, I won a screenwriting competition and worked with a script editor on several drafts – a real test of my skill and talent played out through a one-to-one relationship! Read about it here: How to Develop a Screenplay)

  1. Hi Jessica,

    Your blog is very good!

I have a question, Jupiter and Saturn has been transiting my 7th house since Feb 2021, I am a Leo Ascendant 8 degrees, pisces sun in 8th house and virgo moon in 2nd. I haven’t met anyone at all, and has been quite alone a lot of the times. Saturn has been opposite my ascendant (sitting right on my descendant) for the whole year, is that the reason why? Does Saturn cancels all the benefits of a Jupiter transit? Has the Saturn square Uranus (right now in my 10th house) added extra pressure for me to be alone? (I I have been unemployed since May)

Thank you for this insightful blog!

    1. Hi Grace – glad you like the blog!

Jupiter and Saturn don’t really cancel each other out – it’s more like they operate in opposite ways. So when they’re both in the same house it can get complicated! Jupiter wants to expand while Saturn wants to contract. So the trick is to figure out how to do both. Perhaps Jupiter gives you an optimistic attitude to relationships while Saturn encourages you to be realistic and responsible. It may be that when Saturn moves away from your descendent and into your 7th house things will start to change – plus Jupiter will go into your 8th house and conjunct your Sun possibly bringing some benefits via others.

With Uranus in the 10th squaring Saturn in the 7th, your career is due for an overhaul and you may be able to find a way to do something that gives you more freedom. This could impact your relationships too and there could be some tension there. Perhaps you need some time alone to figure out what you really want to do and to find your true direction in life. That square will be in force through the whole of 2022 so you’ve got plenty of time to experiment and make creative changes to your career and relationships.

      Good luck!

      1. Thank you for your thoughtful responds Jessica!

Do you think another possible interpretation of a 7th house Saturn transit squaring Uranus in 10th house means bad relationships affect career development?

        1. Yes, I supposed that’s a possibility – but so much of what happens with transits is connected to how you think about and approach them. If you’re willing to work with the energies involved, they generally tend to give you an easier time, although there are probably exceptions, no doubt. Also, when things are difficult you have the chance to go deeper and really change – something that’s less likely to happen when things are easier. It may not be fun, and sometimes it can be downright horrible, but transits always end eventually. So whatever you’re going through now, it’s not forever. It will get better – and perhaps there are things that Saturn wants you to do to make things better for yourself?

  2. For what it’s worth, transiting Saturn will be entering my natal 7th house in about 2.5 months (March 2021). There are absolutely no relationship prospects at this time, and not for a lack of trying? Dating prospects suck, on line dating sucks, in person dating sucks, as well, and this has been going on for over 10 years ! Who ever does come knocking is either too old, too fat (overweight), has 10 kids, is out of shape, or is mentally ill ? So, with no decent prospects available, I just rot ! The solar arcs for 2021 are garbage and feature nine sextiles to the natal planets, but, who cares ? it attracts nothing or no one suitable ! I believe more in the SP chart, but SP Moon is in my 12th house (isolation) and it doesn’t climb out of the progressed 12th until much later in 2021. So, what to do.

      1. Hello Jessica,

Yes, transiting Jupiter in Aquarius has been transiting my natal 7th house for a few weeks now.

Nothing spectacular or remarkable is going on ? No prospects have arisen.

I have noticed people are difficult to deal with, in general, at work, but that is work ?

This past week, (two days ago) transiting Jupiter squared my natal Venus in Taurus. About two days ago, I met a jovial Aquarius woman who seems to have an interest in me. However, when I reached out to her, she is illusive and the phone goes to her voicemail.

So, I think I am wasting my time with her. She also laughs and giggles for no good reason and I find that annoying?

Transiting Saturn opposes my n. Uranus this weekend, as does t. Neptune squaring Mercury. Maybe those two shitty transits might explain everything !

        1. Yes, the Saturn opposite Uranus transit is certainly going to complicate things but it’s challenging you to make changes to your life so you can feel more free. The Neptune square to Mercury might confuse things too, leaving you prone to self-deception or escapism.

It sounds like a tricky time for you, but Jupiter will be hanging out in your 7th house for a little while – don’t give up hope yet!

    1. Hi Just a Guy, I’d say the Universe is asking you to work on (Saturn) what you bring to a relationship. We attract who we are, so be the delightful, positive, supportive, happy person you are looking for. The Universe is always for us, so participate with Saturn in being accountable (Saturn asks us to be accountable for the theme of the house it transits) in relationships. Loving you to pieces. 🙂

        1. Thanks for the spiritual help, ILWFS, it is appreciated. I am very busy with my community work, right now, so no time for regrets ? I looked back as to when transiting Saturn last appeared in the 7th house. (1992). I was corresponding by mail with a woman, back then, who I eventually married. The marriage lasted some 14 years? So who knows what will happen this time. many thanks, R.J.

    2. OMG! You just described my life to a T.
All the statements above are the reason why I am stepping away from astrology. The starts are never aligned in my favor. Enough?
