Uranus Transits: 9th House

When Uranus transits the 9th House your need for freedom and change influences how you search for meaning, truth and self-improvement. Uranus speeds things up and disrupts old patterns and represents your need for independence and change in this area.

When Uranus transits the 9th house you may experience disruption and surprises to your religion, beliefs and philosophy of life, higher education and teaching, long-distance travel, publishing, and the law. Your mind may open to new ideas and flashes of insight that encourage you to search for a deeper meaning to your life. This may challenge your beliefs and you may change religions or choose to follow your own spiritual path.

Your beliefs could also change as a result of surprising experiences while travelling abroad. You may explore off the beaten track or go to places you wouldn’t normally visit, but there could be disruption to your travel plans. By remaining flexible you can meet new friends who transform your view of the world and yourself.

You could open your mind by studying Uranian subjects, such as science, technology, radical ideas in philosophy and social reform, or astrology. You may do this at university or by following your own course of study online. You could also share what you’ve learned through education or publishing.

The point of this transit is to find your own meaning in life so you can be true to yourself and continue to grow and explore.

Possibilities with Uranus transiting the 9th House:
  • A sudden vision of cosmic reality
  • Questioning your faith or beliefs
  • Finding a spiritual teacher
  • Exploring other cultures through travel
  • Studying subjects that open your mind
Watch out for:
  • A crisis of faith
  • Dogmatic or fanatical beliefs
  • Getting lost while travelling
  • Disruption to education
  • Unpredictable outcomes to legal disputes
My notes:

Uranus transited my 9th house from 1975 to 1983, from age 6 to 13, and coincided with my journey from primary to secondary school (or high school). These were my formative years and they were dominated by music which probably shaped my view of the world more than I realise.

I wasn’t raised in a religious household but I remember singing hymns at school, although none of it penetrated very deep. I inherited my parent’s atheism and never questioned it (until much later). But during this time I would often have visions while lying awake at night watching fractals dance in the air around me – my early mini visionary phase.

At the start of this transit I began playing the recorder at school and learning to read musical notation – my official second language. I quickly progressed from the descant to the treble and then the sopranino which are all in different keys but I had no trouble switching between them and could transpose on the fly.

Later I had the opportunity to learn another instrument at school and for some unknown reason chose the violin. It was awful! I gave that up, to the joy of the neighbours, and started to learn the piano instead.

During this time I joined a medieval music group with a bunch of other kids that specialised in using mostly period instruments. It was great fun playing my various recorders and the harpsichord, and I even had a go on a kortholt which made a fantastic duck-like sound.

Towards the end of this transit I started playing the flute and couldn’t get a note out of it at first. This upset me because I’d been convinced that this was the instrument for me. But I kept trying and it quickly became my favourite. In 1982 I joined the Brighton Junior Youth Orchestra, the same year that I started high school where my musical adventures continued…
