Neptune Transits to the Moon

When Neptune transits the natal Moon your need for transcendence and imagination influences your feelings, habits and emotional patterns. Neptune inspires new dreams and dissolves old structures and represents your need to spiritualise and refine this area of your life.

When Neptune transits the natal Moon, you may experience inspiration and confusion with your home and family and how you nurture yourself, as well as feelings of security and safety and how you respond instinctively to others. There may also be changes in your relationships to women in general, as well as with your mother or mothering figures in your life.

This transit puts you in touch with your feelings in a way that makes them hard to avoid or deny and you may become more sensitive to atmospheres and the feelings of others. You may feel greater compassion and could express this by nurturing those around you and could experience blissful feelings of oneness and empathy.

Your increased sensitivity may attract people who need your help and you may need to be careful to maintain your boundaries as best you can. You may become overwhelmed by what you’re feeling and this could create problems in your relationships if you or others become too demanding or feel victimised or manipulated.

Hard aspects to the Moon (conjunction, square or opposition) could be more challenging as they make it difficult to perceive yourself or your feelings clearly. Relationships could become tangled with hidden feelings, unspoken expectations and co-dependencies that make you prone to disillusionment and deception. You may need to be extra discerning when dealing with others and get advice or support from somebody you trust.

You could fall for a fantasy version of a person – the image you’re projecting onto them – and they could do this to you too. This may happen because they’re misleading you but you could also be choosing to believe what you want to believe. This creates disillusionment when reality is revealed and you can see the other person as they actually are. Then you can develop a relationship based on reality rather than fantasy.

Neptune reveals the illusions you have about your emotional limitations and need for nurturing so you can become more honest about your feelings. You may need to change how you care for yourself or others or let go of something in your relationships or family life. You can explore your emotional needs to see if they’re being met and learn to give or receive the care that you need.

Your feelings may be more changeable and extreme than usual and you could try to escape from difficult feelings or situations into alcohol or drugs or even spiritual practice. But you can also develop greater compassion for yourself and others and learn to let go of painful feelings from the past and find inner peace.

Possibilities with Neptune transiting the Moon:
  • Nurturing yourself and others with compassion
  • Increased psychic sensitivity
  • Opening to love and romance
  • Healing painful feelings from the past

  • Disillusionment with relationships
  • Loss of family or emotional support
  • Addiction to alcohol, drugs or escapism
  • Difficulties with your home
My Notes:

The first Neptune transit to my natal Moon was the trine in 1975-76, from age 5 to 6, when Neptune was in Sagittarius in my 10th house. Obviously, this is too young for me to remember anything significant from this time, so I have only one transit to share details on:

Neptune transited opposite my natal Moon in 2003-4, from age 32 to 34, when Neptune was in Aquarius in my 1st house having just crossed my Ascendent. My natal Moon is in the 7th house so this transit had a significant effect on my one-to-one relationships, as well as how I nurtured and took care of myself.

Just before this transit started, I had begun to pull myself together after a period of confusion while Neptune was crossing my Ascendent. I had given up the booze and started doing yoga and was trying to get back into being creative again after a lull. I was searching for a new identity and slowly returning to a feeling of confidence in myself.

But my long-term relationship was a mess. I’d been drifting away from him for a while and the split had become inevitable. However, he was still emotionally attached and I didn’t want to be the ‘bad guy’ by dumping him unceremoniously – it had to be done with sensitivity and care.

Part way into this transit he met someone that I knew he liked. In fact, I knew he liked her before he knew himself, just from the way he said her name! So we had a delicate conversation where I gently encouraged him in her direction, letting him go with my blessing. There was no sense in continuing to make each other miserable. (They’re now married, BTW!)

Ending the relationship opened a space in my psyche and into the gap came my first satori at the end of 2003. This also triggered my first dark night of the soul as I struggled to integrate the changes to my perception of reality.

Early in 2004 I had a dream where I was searching a city for where I belonged and was told it was the Castle Keep. I tried to find a map with directions but they were all either blank or gibberish. Only much later did I discover St Theresa of Avila’s idea of the Interior Castle – a symbol of deep inner security, something I’m still searching for…
