When Uranus transits the 1st House your need for freedom and change influences your sense of self and appearance and how you approach life. Uranus speeds things up and disrupts old patterns and represents your need for independence and change in this area.

When Uranus transits the 1st house it brings disruption and surprises to the way you express yourself and present yourself to the world. The purpose behind this is to awaken you to a new vision of your life and encourage you to break free of old habits and limitations that are holding you back.
You may feel excitable and full of ideas for the future. Insights into who you could become may arrive out of the blue, and you could be restless and impatient for change. You may want to experiment with sides of yourself that you haven’t expressed before and aspects of your being that you’ve repressed could return into your consciousness in surprising ways.
Your behaviour could become erratic and unpredictable and this could alienate or shock others who then try to stop you from changing. But if you repress the need for necessary change, it could trigger upsetting events or accidents that force you to confront what you’re avoiding.
Almost any part of your life could change now because this is an angular house so it impacts the whole chart.
Possibilities with Uranus transiting the 1st House:
- Expressing yourself with greater authenticity
- Getting a new job in a different field of work
- Finding a new approach to improving your health
- Experimenting with a new look
- Taking a calculated risk
- Getting a new haircut
Watch out for:
- Impulsive actions
- Ending relationships that limit your freedom
- Going to extremes of self-expression
- Risky behaviour that gets you in trouble
- Wilful rebellion for the sake of it
- You’re not the boss of me!
My notes:
Uranus transited my 1st house from 1998 to 2008, from age 28 to 38, and it involved multiple shifts of identity and expression as my life changed. Sometime near the start of this transit I cropped my hair short after wearing it long for many years. Later I started dyeing it to hide the grey hairs that had crept in when Saturn crossed my ascendant back in 1992.
Prior to this transit I’d been at college and had qualified as a sound engineer and was working freelance in a studio. This was my dream job but I wasn’t earning enough. So as Uranus approached my ascendant, I was forced to enter a training programme to improve my skills. This allowed me to get part-time clerical work in offices which I hated because it wasn’t ‘me’ (despite being a Virgo!).
Then in 2001 I finally managed to get a full-time job as a sound engineer and spent the next 10 years working for a local council recording a talking newspaper – a compromise of my dream that I found increasingly frustrating and began drinking too much. But when my progressed Sun moved to conjunct natal Uranus in 2002, I began to revolutionise myself again.
I stopped boozing, started doing yoga and got a tattoo to commemorate my new beginning and desire to embrace my creativity. But the relationship I was in unravelled because I couldn’t stay within it and remain true to myself. Shortly after we split up, I had my first satori which (again) totally transformed my perspective of reality. Uranus was conjunct my north node in the 1st house and Neptune was conjunct my ascendant.
Then when Uranus moved to oppose my natal Sun in 2004, I started writing ‘out of the blue’ and was bounced into another new identity. I began writing screenplays as well as the non-fiction version of what would become my first novel and this blog series on consciousness.
As Uranus approached the end of my 1st house in 2008, I entered one of my screenplays into a competition and the results were another surprise…

mine did from birth on, and sat went through 8 , and con sun/op pluto. i’ve been thinking what interpretations astrologers have for those. ”14 years ago you … and now ”… , for a 4 year old? seriously, i’ve been wondering. clearly, a lot of trauma started then, sat transiting everything it went past these last 6 years from 1-6. how would one interpret that for a child other than, ”you’ll have to sort that out for the rest of your life”!

Yes, you experience it via your parents or others in general and most of the trauma will probably end up in the unconscious. But that’s what the future transits are for – to dig all that shit up again!
