Uranus Transits: 12th House

When Uranus transits the 12th House your need for freedom and change influences how you deal with the subconscious and spiritual realms. Uranus speeds things up and disrupts old patterns and represents your need for independence and change in this area.

When Uranus transits the 12th house you may experience disruption and surprises with unconscious complexes, secrets and karma, depth psychology and the need for spiritual retreat or healing. This transit shines a light into the darkness of your psyche to reveal the parts of yourself that have become lost or buried in the unconscious.

Repressed feelings and unconscious emotional complexes may return into your awareness, including fears, compulsions, and unhealed grief and wounds that keep you trapped in the past, as well as positive parts of your being that have been hidden, such as talents and gifts. By working with the unconscious you can reintegrate these energies and let go of the past.

You may benefit from keeping a dream journal or doing active imagination and creative work. You may also want to experiment with therapies such as hypnosis, depth psychology, primal therapy, shamanic healing and soul retrieval. You may receive insights that allow you to put your life into a larger perspective, including the karmic patterns that have shaped your life.

The point of this transit is to free yourself from the patterns that are holding you back so you can grow into the person you’re meant to become as Uranus crosses your ascendant and enters your 1st house.

Possibilities with Uranus transiting the 12th House:
  • Insights into your true nature
  • Starting psychotherapy
  • Healing old wounds
  • Going on a spiritual retreat
  • Working with the disenfranchised
Watch out for:
  • Surprise karmic backlash
  • Sneak attacks by hidden enemies
  • Secrets are revealed
  • A stay in hospital or prison
  • Collapse of psychic integrity
My notes:

Uranus transited my 12th house from 1991 to 1998, from ages 21 to 28, and it started with a bang. I was at college studying music and struggling with a breakdown that started with the realisation that I didn’t know who I was. This was triggered by other transits and I was quickly overwhelmed by a mass of chaotic material from my unconscious that almost killed me.

But then Uranus entered my 12th house and I had a breakthrough that pulled me back from the brink and revolutionised my identity and view of reality. The new vision gave me a wider perspective on my experience and I began to process the feelings and memories that had been coming up. I felt guided by a wiser force, something deep within that knew what I needed to do.

I began to study psychology and philosophy, teaching myself how to think and slowly putting my fractured psyche back together again. I discovered the works of Jung, RD Laing and Alan Watts, and began to explore astrology and learned how to meditate.

After graduating college (a miracle!) I moved into a flat on my own and within days was burgled and everything I owned was taken. (Main culprit was Pluto opposite natal Saturn.) All my musical instruments were gone – my entire previous identity was ripped away.

The flat was damp and mildewed and I became depressed and reclusive, digging into the depths of my being and processing my wounds. A new sense of myself began to form in the dark and I remembered my dream of becoming a sound engineer. I found a small project studio in Newcastle that was willing to let me help out and make the tea.

Halfway into this transit there was a detour when I spent a year doing counselling training and helping people with addiction to drugs and alcohol, many of whom spent time on the streets or in mental hospital. This gave me a fresh perspective on my experience and showed me that I was stronger than I believed.

It also provided a bit of karmic foreshadowing when I received surprise positive feedback on the case study I had written for a class. A tiny prod from the universe to consider writing as part of my future, although I didn’t recognise it that way at the time.

I decided to return to college to study Music Production and make my dream of being a sound engineer come true. By the end of this transit I returned to the same project studio, this time as a qualified engineer recording local bands. As Uranus entered Aquarius and approached my ascendant, I met the man who would become my boyfriend for many years, when his band hired the studio to record their demo.

Unfortunately, there wasn’t enough work at the studio and I needed to earn more money. So by the time Uranus had reached my ascendant I was also working part-time for a music development agency. But things were about to change again…

Note: Neptune was also in my 12th house during this time and the early years of the transit coincided with the Uranus Neptune conjunction in the 90s.

  1. I’m so happy to have found your blog, which is rich in information and sharing. Thanks !

I am a Gemini ascendant at 9° and let me tell you Uranus has clearly spared nothing in my life. For now I’m still in it so I may not be very objective but these are the worst years I live, all the themes of the 12th house have been addressed.

In June 2019 I got sick, with symptoms that appeared suddenly after taking an antibiotic. I think it brought out something that was latent. It took me almost 5 years to identify the bacteria involved in this chronic infection (hidden).

Because of my health condition I had to stop working and go back to live with my paternal grandparents. This allowed me to understand the root of my father’s narcissism, and to see this patern replay it.

In May 2021 I underwent a nose surgery that went very badly, and left me disfigured, it took 2 other interventions to correct this. In total I had 3 hospitalizations under this transit.

Isolation, isolation and isolation. I cut off contact with all my friends except one and even today I am not able to have social interactions because it requires too much effort, energy and I do not feel me enough.

A lot of awareness, of things that have come to the surface that had been hidden for many years. Better self-understanding too. I also started a psychoanalysis.

Extreme mental states with frequent dark thoughts.

Develop a better understanding of the human body and its functioning, do a lot of research and reading on nutrition, science and biology.

Discovery of astrology that allowed me to give a certain meaning, relief to the painful situations experienced. It’s certainly the most beautiful thing that happened to me during this transit.

Now I can’t wait to experience Uranus in the first house which according to the different testimonies seems exciting.

Maybe you could tell me when Uranus will be in my first house.

When I look on astroseek it seems to tell me not before August 21, 2027 but Uranus is currently in Gemini so I’m not sure I understand well ?

    1. Thank you for sharing your experience, Chloe – it sounds like Uranus brought a lot of old hidden things to the surface so you can remake yourself when he crosses your Ascendent.

You’re right about the date – Uranus should cross your Ascendent in August 2027 but will toggle back into your 12th house and then enters your 1st house for good in May 2028. It’s only a couple of years away!

        1. That probably means your Ascendant is at 9 40′ Gemini. It depends how precise you want to be. I would just count it from when Uranus reaches 9 degrees.

In that case, he gets to 9 Gemini on 29th July 2027 when he’ll be conjunct your Ascendant and then goes retrograde at 9 57′ Gemini on 15th September 2027 – still conjunct your Ascendant. That could be a powerful or surprising moment! Then he’ll go back into your 12th house when he reaches 8 Gemini on 3rd November 2027.

He’ll return to 9 Gemini and conjunct your Ascendant again on 13th May 2028 when he enters your 1st house for good. He reaches 9 40′ Gemini on 24th May 2028.

If you’re working with a 3 degree orb, Uranus will conjunct your Ascendant when he reaches 6 Gemini in June 2027. But you might start getting zapped with new ideas and possibilities before then if you’re sensitive to this energy.

In that case, an 8 degree orb means Uranus will conjunct your Ascendant from 1 Gemini – which is very soon! 3rd August 2025 until 9th October 2025. Then again from 13th May 2026 after which Uranus will slowly get closer and closer to your Ascendant.

So over the next couple of years you might start getting some relief. Stay open to possibilities and watch your intuition like a hawk! Good luck!

    1. Don’t be scared, Alicia. I had a lot of other transits and progressions going on at the same time which made it a particularly intense time. Like my progressed Sun conjunct natal Pluto in the 8th house and Saturn and Neptune both transiting the 12th house too. Your situation will be different – so don’t assume the worst!

  3. Wow, I just read through all your notes on Uranus through each house and started delving into mine and WOW my mind is just blown with how things have transpired in my life. I also pushed back against and authoritarian parent when Uranus was in my tenth, left organizations and had a falling out with my best friend when it was in my 7th- also went through high school and made many new, albeit not long lasting, friends. 12th house I had a few major breakdowns, went through extremely toxic relationships, stayed in mental hospitals and got diagnosed and started on meds for bipolar. Interestingly, Uranus just moved into my first in February and I’ve completely lost interest in art, when I’ve been an artist my whole life! I’ve been delving super hard into astrology and want to learn everything! Anyway, thankyou so much for your entries, it’s made me realize so much!

  4. I’ve been waiting for this! My moon is in the 12th in taurus conjunct my north node and I really thought I should be travelling, on the move. But it’s become clear that I’m in 12th house mode! On the positive side, I’ve started making more content and am going to be doing more fun chatty stuff because for some reason, I’ve kept that side of myself under wraps!
