Uranus Transits to Mercury

When Uranus transits natal Mercury your need for freedom and change influences how you think and express your ideas. Uranus speeds things up and disrupts old patterns and represents your need for independence and change in this area.

When Uranus transits natal Mercury you may experience surprises and disruption to your thinking, communication, and perception of reality, and in your daily interactions with neighbours and siblings, and in trips around your local neighbourhood.

Uranus speeds up your mind and gives you a cosmic perspective on reality. Your intuition may be heightened, although it may not be reliable, and you could receive insights and revelations that change your life in unpredictable ways. It’s a great time to learn new skills or study any subject that interests you. You can break out of old patterns of thinking and find solutions to problems that have been stuck for a while.

Hard aspects to Mercury (conjunction, square or opposition) could trigger erratic thinking or fixed ideas that cause communication problems or alienate you from others. But the point of this transit is to ensure that your thinking creates room for growth and gives you the freedom to change your mind.

Possibilities with Uranus transiting Mercury:
  • Learning new skills
  • Surprising new ideas
  • Expanding your mind using technology or psychedelics
  • Exciting encounters in the neighbourhood
  • Writing or learning about radical subjects
Watch out for:
  • Extreme ideas
  • Hyperactive and scattered attention
  • Sudden disruption to travel plans
  • Accidents while travelling
  • People think you’re crazy!
My notes:

Uranus transited sextile my natal Mercury in 1980-81 from age 10–11 when Uranus was in Scorpio in my 9th house. This coincided with the start of my musical vocation which shaped my perception of reality more than I understood at the time, although I can’t remember much. Uranus was also conjunct my natal Neptune at the same time.

Uranus transited square my natal Mercury in 1987-88 from age 17–18 when Uranus was in Sagittarius in my 11th house. This coincided with the continuation of my musical adventures when I was at sixth form and studying for my A Levels. I completed my exams and left school that summer to work at the Virgin Megastore in Brighton where I learned a new set of skills dealing with customers and sharing my knowledge of music.

Uranus transited trine my natal Mercury in 1995 from age 24–25 when Uranus was in Capricorn in my 12th house. This was when I was at college for the second time studying music production so I could fulfil my dream of becoming a sound engineer.

I had to fight to get funding to do the course and it took a little while to come through. The start of this transit coincided with when that arrived and I knew I would be able to continue with my studies. My main memory is of the pure joy of spending time in the studios and learning about recording – I was living my dream! Uranus was also sextile natal Neptune at the same time.

Uranus transited opposite my natal Mercury in 2010-11 from age 39–40 when Uranus was in Pisces in my 2nd house. This is when I was working as a sound engineer recording a talking newspaper and writing screenplays in my spare time and running a writing group and dealing with a lot of rejection of my writing.

Early in the transit I attended a screenwriting conference which convinced me that being a scriptwriter wasn’t for me so I concentrated on my first novel instead. I also started my first blog, Free Your Pen, and finished the first draft of my first novel Addled just before my 40th birthday.

Meanwhile, all hell was breaking loose with abuse from a neighbour and then news of redundancies to be made at work when the service was to be closed. I disbanded the writing group because nobody could be bothered to turn up anymore, and was made redundant as the transit ended.

Uranus was trine natal Neptune at the same time, but there were also other transits which made this such a stressful period, including Uranus opposite natal Pluto and Pluto square natal Uranus, plus both Neptune and Chiron opposite natal Mars, and Saturn transiting the 8th house.

Uranus will transit trine my natal Mercury again in 2024-26 from age 54–55 when Uranus is in Taurus in my 3rd house. This is a current transit and part of the mini triangle configuration – I may update this later…
