When Neptune transits natal Mars your need for transcendence and imagination influences your energy levels and how you go after your goals. Neptune inspires new dreams and dissolves old structures and represents your need to spiritualise and refine this area of your life.

When Neptune transits natal Mars you may experience inspiration and confusion with your desires and goals and how you assert yourself and use your physical energy. Neptune encourages you to become less impulsive and self-centred by revealing your illusions about how you use your willpower so you can be more realistic once the transit is over.
You may become more aware of others’ feelings as your boundaries are blurred and this allows you to take their needs into consideration before going after your goals. You may be more likely to include others in your plans or take action that benefits others as well as yourself or put your own needs aside in order to help others.
Your actions could be inspired by an intuitive sense of what needs to be done in the moment and you can assert yourself with greater sensitivity and compassion that enhances your ability to succeed. You can also learn how to take action without being attached to the outcome and transcend your own desires.
Hard aspects to Mars (conjunction, square, and opposition) could be more challenging and you could become confused about what you want or lose your sense of direction in life. You may struggle to motivate yourself to do anything and could be prone to depression which may undermine your self-confidence.
Your energy levels could also be lower than normal and you may feel drained or tired. There could be health problems that are hard to diagnose or illnesses related to something that you’re avoiding but need to take action on. You may need to turn inwards to discover what you need to change or do in order to shift the energy and get moving again.
You may need to make sacrifices in relation to your goals and desires and there could be obstacles or difficulties that force you to change course or rethink what you’re doing. You could be misled by others or deceive yourself about your own motives so it may not be a good idea to start something new during the hard transits, especially if it’s risky or requires a lot of energy or stamina.
If you do fail during this time then try not to take it personally. It may mean that you were simply doing the wrong thing and needed a course correction, or you might have been doing the right thing in the wrong way. You may need to take a detour before you can do what you need to do later. Failing can also give you a deeper understanding of yourself and your motives.
Even if you don’t fail you could become disillusioned with what you’ve been doing and need to spend some time doing nothing. Feeling lost provides an opportunity to stop moving and just be for a while. Your energy has turned inwards and is reorganising itself so you need to wait for it to start flowing in a new direction. The way forward will become clear by the end of the transit but in the meantime, you can learn to act on faith even if you can’t see where you’re going.

My Notes:
I was born with Neptune square Mars so the first transit was the trine to my natal Mars in 1982-83, from age 11 to 13, when Neptune was in Sagittarius in my 11th house. There’s not much to say about this except that it coincided with when I was playing lots of music at school. So I only have one transit to share notes on:
Neptune transited opposite my natal Mars in 2010-11, from age 39 to 40, when Neptune was in Aquarius in my 1st house. This was a nasty transit that coincided with the Uranus transit opposite my Mercury Pluto conjunction in the 8th house and Chiron also opposing my Mars. I got stuff done but it was hard work.
At the start of the transit I was working as a sound engineer for the local council while writing screenplays and my first novel in my spare time. But then one of my teeth began to disintegrate exposing the toxic filling and it had to be removed. It came out in five pieces – a truly unpleasant experience which I now believe poisoned me because my health began to collapse after this.
My stress levels also increased thanks to abuse and death threats from a psychotic neighbour that escalated into false allegations of anti-social behaviour against me – classic projection. Meanwhile, my job was under threat and we were informed that the service would close early in 2011. I was made redundant just as this transit ended.
As my health imploded with inflammatory bowel disease, I had to disband the writing group that I’d been running because I didn’t have the energy for it anymore. I also gave up writing screenplays but was able to complete the first draft of Addled while under extreme duress – I still don’t know how I managed it, looking back!
I remember feeling almost possessed by rage at times, as well as frustrated and depressed. Nothing I did seemed to make any difference, especially in relation to the death threats. All I could do was call the police who didn’t do anything either, except “have a word.” The attacks did stop but I still ran into the psycho regularly.
This situation forced me to learn about the wisdom of non-action. I was prevented from taking action in the face of the dubious actions of others and had to just wait for the energy to shift – a very hard lesson at the time.
