When Neptune transits natal Neptune your need for transcendence and imagination influences your ideals and desire to merge with something larger than yourself. Neptune inspires new dreams and dissolves old structures and represents your need to spiritualise and refine this area of your life.

When Neptune transits natal Neptune you may experience inspiration and confusion with your ideals and spirituality, your imagination and how you perceive transcendent levels of reality, as well as your illusions and desire to escape reality. This is a generational transit that affects whole groups of people at the same time but you’ll also experience it on a personal level based on the placement of your natal Neptune.
The Neptune cycle is too long to complete during one lifetime so you’ll only experience up to the half-return, depending on how long you live.
The conjunction can happen early in your life if your natal Neptune is retrograde or stations retrograde shortly after you’re born. It may indicate an experience of loss that wounds your feeling of safety and gives you an unconscious desire for unconditional love or to return to the bliss of the womb. This could manifest in later life as a death wish or addiction problems, depending on the rest of your chart, especially when Neptune transits itself.
The sextile happens in your late 20s around the same time as your first Saturn return and Uranus trine itself. How this affects you will depend on what you’ve been doing up until this point. Neptune inspires new potentials, dreams and ideals for you to explore. You may have a vision of what you could become and may find out how realistic this vision is at your Saturn return.
The square happens in your early 40s around the same time as the Uranus half-return and just before the Saturn half-return. This is part of the midlife crisis and how it affects you depends on your approach to life so far. Neptune reveals the conflict between your ideals and what you’ve actually achieved and you may feel disillusioned with the way your life has turned out.
This could manifest as a spiritual crisis or search for meaning, especially if you appear to have everything you need but still feel that something is missing. You can use this time to turn inwards and reconnect with the lost parts of yourself and may become aware of new dreams and possibilities that you’d like to pursue.
The trine happens in your early 50s around the same time as the Uranus trine to itself or just before. Neptune opens up possibilities for new growth and you may have visionary experiences that transform your consciousness. You may find it easier to let go of things because you can see your life with a wider perspective that gives it greater meaning. You can grow through self-acceptance and develop faith as you mature into elder status.
The opposition or Neptune half-return happens in your early 80s around the same time as the Uranus return at age 84. How this affects you depends on how well you’ve taken care of yourself over the years. Your energy levels may be lower as your body becomes weaker and you could struggle with dementia or health problems that leave you dependent on others for care.
But you can also transform the way you see yourself and reality by letting go of the past while remaining open to life and the possibilities it contains. You may feel nostalgic and can review the past with a fresh perspective that reveals the wisdom you’ve gained over the years. This allows you to make peace with the past and the reality of death. It’s a good time to tie up loose ends and get ready for the adventure to come.

My Notes:
Neptune transited sextile my natal Neptune in 1997-98, from age 26 to 27, when Neptune was in Capricorn in my 12th house. This coincided with when I was finally able to live my dream of being a sound engineer recording local bands in a project studio. But the dream wasn’t perfect as there wasn’t enough work to make ends meet. So by the end of the transit I was also working part-time in crappy office admin jobs to pay the bills.
Neptune transited square my natal Neptune in 2010-12, from age 39 to 41, when Neptune was in Aquarius in my 1st house. This coincided with when I was working as a sound engineer for the local council recording a talking newspaper which was a compromise on my original dream. I dealt with this by expressing my creativity through writing screenplays and novels in my spare time.
Writing had become my new dream and early in the transit I attended a screenwriting conference to explore the possibilities. But when I discovered the reality of working as a scriptwriter in the industry it became clear that it wasn’t for me. I decided to stick to novels.
Meanwhile, I was made redundant from my job when the service closed and was under extreme stress at home thanks to death threats from a neighbour which affected my health. Despite this I managed to complete my first novel, Addled. This period coincided with Neptune opposing my Mars which is why it was so bad.
By the end of this transit I had given up two dreams: one voluntarily and the other compelled by circumstances. My dream of getting published died later when Neptune opposed my Sun.
Neptune is transiting trine my natal Neptune in 2024-25, from age 53 to 54, when Neptune is in Pisces in my 2nd house. This is a current transit and part of the mini triangle configuration. So far it seems to be working on a spiritual level because I have no dreams left to trash!
It coincided with Neptune opposing my Mercury Pluto conjunction in the 8th house which was an incredibly stressful period. Those transits brought my death wish into my awareness and forced me to stop running away from it. The intensity of the experience backed me into a corner where the only way out was in. I turned towards prayer because nothing else worked.
I also received some extraordinary guidance from my experiments using the I Ching which consistently held my feet to the fire and refused to let me get away with lying to myself. This was very annoying at times! But it was always proved correct. I use this excellent site with commentary by James DeKorne.
