Pluto Transits: 10th House

When Pluto transits the 10th house your need for transformation and power influences your career, vocation and status in the world. Pluto destroys and regenerates old structures and represents your need to be empowered and reborn in this area.

When Pluto transits the 10th house it brings intensity and evolution to your career or vocation, status, reputation, and public life, and in your relationship to employers and authority figures. Remember your vocation may not be the same as your job so either or both could be affected, and what happens will depend on your age and situation.

Pluto will challenge you to transform your career and you may feel dissatisfied and want to find work that allows you to express yourself with greater passion and authenticity. You may lose your job through circumstances beyond your control or you could just get fed up and leave to find something better. You may want to work in areas such as psychology, medicine, detective or investigative work, politics, nuclear power or research, mining or working underground or undercover in secret.

There could be power struggles at work with your colleagues, boss or people in authority. These conflicts might reflect issues you had with your parents when you were a child and you may need to face unresolved emotional complexes or wounds that need healing. If you’re younger, you could have conflicts with your parents or teachers or other people in authority over you.

You may also struggle with your own authority and whether you want power and how to use it. You could feel more ambitious than usual and start working incredibly hard to achieve your career goals. But you could also become obsessed with work and drive yourself or your colleagues too hard, becoming domineering in your approach.

But any ruthless tendencies to control others will cause problems and you may end up losing your power or authority if you abuse your position. You could be forced to change by failures and losses at work or at home and this will encourage you to deepen your approach by finding goals and ambitions that reflect who you really are.

You can achieve great success, status and recognition during this transit if you’re willing to act with integrity, authenticity and humanity. This is most likely if you know yourself well and have been working towards success for a while. But if you don’t know yourself, you can find your true vocation by exploring different paths until you find one that expresses your true purpose by the end of the transit.

Possibilities with Pluto transiting the 10th house:
  • Working hard to achieve your ambitions
  • Promotion or more power at work
  • Change in career direction
  • Transformation of your public image and reputation
  • Discovering new talents and gifts
  • Discovering a new vocation
Watch out for:
  • Loss of your job
  • Power struggles with your boss or authority figures
  • Obsession with work or working too hard
  • Abuse or misuse of power
  • Ruthless pursuit of your ambitions
  • Death of a parent
My Notes:

Pluto transited my 10th house from 1998 to 2005, from age 28 to 35, and coincided with my young adult life and search for a decent job after leaving college for the second time as a qualified sound engineer.

For the first couple of years of this transit I was frustrated and bored with my work because I was stuck in dead-end office jobs that didn’t really suit me. But shortly after my Saturn return at age 30, I found the perfect compromise: a job at the local council recording a talking newspaper for the blind and partially sighted.

While I enjoyed the job and my colleagues were great, I began to get bored with the lack of real creativity at work (Sagittarius at the MC). Something else was rumbling in the depths of my being and it was making me uncomfortable. I compensated by spending more time on spiritual study and meditation and this led to a major breakthrough that overturned my whole identity.

Shortly after this I began to write stories and screenplays (thanks to Uranus opposing my Sun), while I grappled with the idea of being a reluctant mystic. As Pluto reached the end of this house, I felt that writing might have become my vocation and I wrote a non-fiction version of what would later become my first novel, Addled. 1. At this time I got my first real job. Geologist’s Assistant based at a gold mine. The job involved going underground to sample the ore body. But I was really wanting to make it as a writer and soon my stories were getting published.
