When Pluto transits the 12th house your need for transformation and power influences how you deal with the subconscious and spiritual realms. Pluto destroys and regenerates old structures and represents your need to be empowered and reborn in this area.

When Pluto transits the 12th house it brings intensity and evolution to your unconscious complexes, secrets and karma, depth psychology and the need for spiritual retreat or healing. How this transit affects you will depend on your age when it happens and how aware you are of your unconscious patterns of behaviour.
You may become aware of parts of your being that have been repressed or denied, including fears and old wounds that need healing. You could also discover positive traits that you rejected due to fear of being unacceptable and potentials that you’re not yet aware of that need developing. These things return to your awareness so you can reintegrate them and heal and become more whole.
Circumstances will encourage you to face what you’ve repressed and you may be confronted by the darkest parts of your shadow. This may include extreme feelings from childhood, such as rage, grief, powerlessness, and survival issues. You may want to spend more time alone to process what comes up and may feel compelled to turn inwards to explore your inner world. If you resist this need, you could trigger extreme events that force you to deal with what you’re denying.
Parts of your life that no longer work may end during this transit and you may need to let go of old dreams, goals or identities. This may involve a descent into the underworld and the destruction of an old way of life that makes way for the renewal of life in a new form or direction by the end of the transit.
This could also include a confrontation with karma from your current or previous lives, as well as unresolved issues from your ancestral inheritance that may need to be explored and reintegrated. You could even encounter a deeper layer of the collective unconscious in the form of archetypes and beings from other dimensions.
This could be a rich source of inspiration and healing but could also be dangerous if you don’t have guidance and a solid anchor in the earthly dimensions. You could have a breakdown if your mind can’t handle the influx from the unconscious and you may need to seek support if you become overwhelmed.
Your dreams may be more powerful and intense and could bring new information to your awareness. By cooperating with Pluto you can go deep into your psyche and free yourself from whatever is stopping you from being true to yourself. You can grow in spiritual and emotional depth and maturity to be reborn when Pluto crosses your Ascendant and enters your first house.
Possibilities with Pluto transiting the 12th house:
- Exploring the depths of your psyche and emotions
- Healing the wounds of the past
- Exploring ancestral karma and past lives
- Going on a spiritual retreat
- Profound dreams and guidance
- Working for charities or institutions that help the vulnerable
Watch out for:
- Death of old dreams and ways of life
- Reliving the traumas of the past
- Resisting necessary change due to fear
- Compulsive and obsessive behaviour
- Being a psychic sponge and getting overwhelmed
- Psychological and emotional breakdown
My Notes:
Pluto is transiting my 12th house from 2014 to 2029, from age 44 to 59, and will coincide with the slow transition from mid-life into becoming an elder. So far this has involved the disintegration of many parts of my life and the ending of many dreams and old identities and beliefs.
The transit started with the most dramatic change when I had an early menopause that intensified my existing health issues in a way that forced me to deal with them. I’m slowly getting the hang of how my energy levels have changed and learning to take better care of myself as I age.
Pluto has also been deconstructing my dreams and assumptions forcing me to rethink every area of my life. All my dreams have now been crushed and set on fire and then stomped on. It hasn’t been fun. That process recently intensified when Pluto squared my natal Jupiter (currently ongoing).
I’ve been forced to face my darkest fears which are pretty dark because I have a packed 8th house. But that also means I’m used to hanging out in darkness and staring into the abyss so it’s kind of business as usual. I’m slowly discovering a different quality in the darkness as I grope my way around and learn to surrender to the present moment.
The hardest part of this transit is having to get on with normal day-to-day stuff while processing some of the most egregious shit imaginable. It forces you to take things less personally and get over yourself and stop fighting and resisting because you don’t have the energy to do anything else.
The transit doesn’t end for a while and right now I’m still in the dark, but I know the light switch is around here somewhere! More on Pluto in 12th here.

Hi J. I turned 6-0 this summer and have had pluto bulldozing through my first house for 12 years now….
The 12th house was certainly dark and difficult and I now realize I had only dealt with the tip of the iceberg- it seems I am now working hard with themes from both houses, and if anything I wish I could have had these life transforming transits earlier. To be fair tho, I might not have coped with them then.
Welcome whatever Pluto offers with both arms. I am 3x as alive as before and still able to make good of knowing who I am and why I am here.
As always your writing here is excellent and useful. Cheers.
