When Pluto transits the natal Sun your need for transformation and power influences your sense of self and how you express yourself. Pluto destroys and regenerates old structures and represents your need to be empowered and reborn in this area.

When Pluto transits the natal Sun, it brings intensity and evolution to almost any area of your life because it influences whatever you identify with. Pluto will challenge you to make creative changes to your identity so how it manifests depends on your level of self-awareness before the transit. If you’re out of touch with your true nature or authentic aspects of your identity then Pluto could bring extreme changes. This doesn’t have to be a bad thing!
You can develop a more profound expression of your Sun sign, including aspects to your Sun and its house placement. Pluto brings awareness to parts of yourself that you need to develop and encourages you to go deeper in your expression of aspects you’re already familiar with. If you’ve overidentified with one aspect of yourself then you may need to learn to take a new approach or let go of parts of your being that you’ve outgrown.
Hard aspects to the Sun (conjunction, square or opposition) may be more challenging and you may need to face the dark side of yourself, such as fears or emotional complexes that need healing. These return to your awareness so you can understand yourself better and become more balanced in your self-expression.
This process may include developing a stronger relationship to your own power and authority as an individual, as expressed through your Sun placement. You may feel more ambitious or discover new goals you would like to achieve, or receive a promotion at work, for example, that allows you to learn how to use your power in new ways.
Pluto boosts your energy and you could become ruthless in your pursuit of power which may provoke opposition from others. This is more likely with the hard aspects unless you tend to be domineering normally, in which case even the sextile and trine could exaggerate these tendencies and make them worse.
There may be conflicts with authority, people in power, or your father, especially if you push your luck. But you may also need to resist somebody else trying to dominate you or force you to do something that isn’t right for you. If you always let others walk all over you, now may be the time to stand up for yourself and step into your power.
If you resist the need for change, circumstances beyond your control may force you to change anyway, perhaps through illness or health difficulties. A health crisis provides an opportunity to transform how you use your energy so you can rebuild your strength as the transit comes to an end.
Possibilities with Pluto transiting the Sun:
- Exploring new forms of self-expression

- Health crisis or illness
- Problems with your father
My Notes:
Pluto transited sextile my natal Sun in 1985-86, from age 15 to 16, when Pluto was in Scorpio in my 9th house. My Sun is in Virgo in the 7th house and this transit coincided with when I got my first boyfriend, starting the process of learning about one-to-one relationships.
Pluto transited square my natal Sun in 1997-98, from age 26 to 28, when Pluto was in Sagittarius in my 9th house and just about to cross my Midheaven. This transit coincided with when I met another new boyfriend while working at a studio recording local bands – my dream job.
Unfortunately, there wasn’t enough work at the studio so halfway through the transit I had to start doing part-time jobs to pay the bills. By the end of the transit I was working at a music development agency doing admin and accounts and learning about a whole new dimension of my Virgo Sun.
Pluto transited trine my natal Sun in 2010-11, from age 39 to 41, when Pluto was in Capricorn in my 11th house. At the start of this transit I was working as a sound engineer recording a talking newspaper while writing screenplays and my first novel in my spare time and running a writer’s group.
But then everything started to unravel with death threats from a neighbour, the collapse of my health and loss of my job. It was an incredibly stressful period due to other transits giving me a hard time, including Neptune and Chiron opposite natal Mars, Uranus opposite natal Pluto, and Pluto square natal Uranus.
The Pluto trine to my Sun probably provided support in the background and gave me extra power and determination to not get dragged down by what was happening. Somehow despite it all I managed to complete the first draft of Addled.
