Agenda: Awakening! is part of my quest to find a meaningful response to the destructive insanity being unleashed upon our world.
Like many people, I have experienced a lot of disruption over the last few years. I lost my job and my health, and was plunged into a dark night of the soul. I’d been there before so it was familiar territory, but I did start to wonder if this kind of permanent upheaval was to become the new normal. My health is now more or less restored (so long as I stay away from the forbidden foods!), but a new job has proved elusive.
I’m reinventing myself and seeking out a new story for my life. Doing that within the context of the possible collapse of everything I have previously taken for granted just adds to the challenge.
What’s the story?
It’s time to let go of the old ego agendas. Ego wants Power! Control! Growth! Money! More Money! Even More Money! You get the idea…
Ego likes to tell the story of how it is the master of its fate and captain of its ship. We are here to dominate nature and stride across the earth as gods on the ultimate power trip.
But our power is not in our ability to master the natural world. Our true power lies in the way we think and what stories we choose to believe. If we’re going to have a future we need new and better stories – preferably ones that don’t end with us digging the ground out from under our own feet.
Right now, we’re at the point in the story when the hero or heroine is lost in the dark woods. We are pursued by wolves and beset by monsters, menaced by our own internal fears as much as by the size of Grandma’s teeth.
In the Grail story, Percival eventually stumbles across a wise old hermit in a shack. The hermit lives in the dark wood and understands its ways. He knows all the paths: the ones that lead to destruction and death, and the one that leads to freedom.
How does the story end?
I don’t know where we’re going. Nobody does. Nobody is driving the bus. But wherever we end up, it begins now. Every day we make choices and believe in the stories we tell ourselves. If we want to have a future and find our way out of the woods we must choose to wake up.
The chaos erupting around us in the form of climate change, egregious social injustice, and barbaric warmongering, are all manifestations of our own shadow. We are the monsters. The wolves that haunt our nightmares come from the depths of our own fractured souls. We can’t blame anyone else for the mess we’re in.
We did this. It’s all on us.
So how do we find the right path? When lost in the woods it helps if you can see where you’re going. Luckily we have the very thing we need, hidden within us. It’s always been there but we tend to overlook it, distracted as we are by bread and circuses and shiny new toys.
Chained to a rock
Poor old Prometheus. He did us a favour and we ignored it. He stole fire from the gods to give us the gift of consciousness and we use it to play Candy Crush. (I have no idea what that is, I just looked it up. In my day, it was Tetris)
“To use the mind as it’s all too commonly used, on the kinds of things that it’s usually used on, is about as inefficient and inappropriate as using a magic sword to open a can of beans.” – Benjamin Hoff, The Tao of Pooh
Zeus wasn’t best pleased when he discovered what Prometheus had done, so chained the hapless Titan to a rock where an eagle pecked out his liver for eternity.
This sad tale is a warning against having too much consciousness. Those in power always seek to limit the awareness of the people they govern, and stories like this surely help. But we also collude in our own blindness. Being conscious (i.e. self-aware) hurts, which is why we spend so much of our time trying to be unconscious in myriad and inventive ways.
But our unconsciousness has now become a threat to our survival.
Prometheus was eventually rescued from his fate by Hercules, indicating that the time had come for his gift to be unleashed. Our own consciousness can lead us from the darkness, if we’re willing to trust it.
People are awakening in droves! Humanity is ready to take on Prometheus’ challenge and use the gift of fire he bequeathed us.
If we don’t, we’ll destroy ourselves with our own darkness.
Time to wake up!
