How to Interpret Uranus Transits

Uranus represents the principle of revolutionary change and freedom from tradition and the past. It takes 84 years to transit the whole zodiac and spends about 7 years in each sign and forms a regular pattern of transits to its own natal placement. The first square happens at about age 20-21, the opposition at 40-42, and the second square at 62-64, with the Uranus return at age 84.

Uranus represents your need for change and freedom and encourages you to wake up to the larger reality in which you live. He pushes you to grow beyond the ego and the limits of Saturn and awakens you to the higher cosmic order of the universe. He works through flashes of insight and intuition, bringing innovation, knowledge, and genius by revealing the workings of the Universal Mind.

Transits don’t show specifically what will manifest, but they do show how the energy is released. Uranus releases energy suddenly and quickly and speeds things up in unpredictable ways. This makes specific events during Uranus transits hard to predict. But the planet or house affected by Uranus shows the part of your life that’s ready for change.

Uranus transits disrupt the status quo and any structure that has become too rigid or stagnant. This may feel exciting, intense and electrifying, driving a desire for greater freedom, rebellion and reform. But you may also feel restless and wired and have trouble sitting still or sleeping, like being plugged into the electricity supply.

There may be unexpected events and sudden shifts in direction, surprising opportunities and new beginnings, new ideas and ways of thinking, and reversals of fortune or situations. This may feel liberating but can also be unsettling as you deal with the uncertainty of change and the need to adapt to new conditions, some of which may be unwelcome.

Uranus pushes you out of the known into the unknown in order to encourage you to keep growing as an individual. This can be destabilising because it challenges the comfortable structures that you’ve outgrown, whether these are outer situations like a job or relationship, or inner states like a belief system, self-identity or old patterns of emotional conditioning.

Anything that’s holding you back or restricting your growth will be ripe for disruption. Previously hidden feelings, thoughts, desires, ideas, and potentials may come bursting into your awareness demanding that you do something about them. Or a surprising event in your outer life overturns the old order and forces you to change in response.

Whatever comes up isn’t really new and may have been bubbling under for a while. It might feel like a surprise, but if you’ve been paying attention, it’ll feel obvious. The question is whether you’re willing to embrace the potential for change in your life or resist it.

You can avoid change during Uranus transits but it’ll make you miserable and could cause accidents, illness or nervous disorders. You may double down on old habits and patterns and deny that you need to change despite any evidence to the contrary. But the more you resist, the more likely you are to experience extreme disruption of the upsetting kind. Events beyond your control will push you to change and let go of the past.

On the other hand, you may react to the potential for change by going overboard in demanding your freedom, perhaps in response to feeling held back by others for too long. Your behaviour could become erratic and impulsive, pushing you to take dangerous risks with unpredictable results. You could become fanatical, self-centred and controlling of others in an attempt to be independent and free.

At best, you can use Uranus transits to break free of any structures (inner and outer) that no longer work for you. But this isn’t about change for the sake of change. Uranus opens your perception with the intention of bringing you closer to the truth of who you are and nudging you along the path of individuation – although sometimes those nudges feel more like cosmic shoves or lightning bolts of revelation.

Uranus may zap you with creative insights, ideas and potentials but you may not fully understand everything that you see in your vision. To realise your vision of new potentials you have to bring it down to earth and do the work to ground the changes to make them real. Uranus only plants the seeds of change. You’re the one who has to cultivate those seeds over time.

However, just because you have a Uranus transit doesn’t mean that something will definitely happen. Despite Uranus’ love of lightning bolts, his transits can sometimes be quite subtle and internal. What you experience will depend on what you need and how willing you are to cooperate with the changes that are necessary.

Uranus, Neptune and Pluto represent collective or transpersonal energies that are beyond your conscious control. All you can do is choose how you respond to that energy and what you do with it.

With Uranus it’s best to remain open to change, even when it’s scary, and do your best not to resist making necessary changes. Find creative and constructive outlets for the increased energy that you may experience during these times so you don’t get overwhelmed.

And finally, learn to trust the wisdom and timing of the inner Self – the deepest part of your being that knows what you need at any given time – and allow that to guide your next steps on your journey of change.

  1. Not for the first time, I heard from Jessica what nobody else is saying: that nothing need happen when Uranus makes contact. And how right she is! I’ve been waiting for a long time for transit Uranus in my 11th to move into exact trine with my natal Moon in the 7th. It’s there now. There was a sudden rush of costly electricity and plumbing problems. And I made a snap decision to join a very close friend who lives on another continent and wants to tour select parts of France’s Occitanie and Spain’s Andalusia. That will be fun, of course. But it will be expensive. And I don’t care. That is very unusual for me, not because I consider thrift a virtue; it’s just that it tends to be forced on me.

Hmmm. These are all little nothings. But a Uranus trine … with my Moon at that? C’mon! :)

    1. It does sound like something to me – electricity problems is classic Uranus and the Moon could be associated with plumbing cos it’s related to water. And Uranus in the 11th. indicates changes with friendships and you’re off on an exciting adventure with a friend. The fact that you’re okay with all this could be the trine nature of the energy making you feel relaxed about change and open to new experiences. So, not nothing!

      1. No, not nothing, Jessica. And thank you for your perfect analysis. But in my fond preconception, a trine is supposed to give big, and handsomely. :)

        1. Trines are usually very positive, yes, but maybe it works differently with the trans-Saturnian planets. I’ve had Uranus oppositions that were positive and trines that weren’t. It seems like something else is going on – not sure what…!

  3. The 4 quadrants of the life cycle (84 years) are 21 years each,
like the 4 faces of a pyramid or being born and reborn every
21 years into the end of the harvest or legacy cycle (63-84+).
3 x 28 is also 84, very close to the three Saturn returns in one’s
lifetime. Hence, the importance of the Saturn-Uranus
    conjunctions.
