Taurus is all about sensuality and stability, bimbling along smelling the flowers and enjoying the simple pleasures of life. If you want to know the best places to eat or be entertained, ask a Taurus. Pragmatic and earthy, once convinced of the value of something they will pursue it relentlessly – tenacious barely covers it – and good luck to you if you get in the way. Taurus is ruled by Venus.
The story of Theseus and the Minotaur contains many dimensions of Taurus. It all starts when King Minos agrees to sacrifice his best white bull to Poseidon in exchange for mastery of the seas. But King Minos is greedy so kills a lesser bull, keeping the best for himself. In revenge, Aphrodite makes King Minos’ wife fall in love with the bull, contriving (look away now if you’re offended by bestiality) to mate with it. She gives birth to the Minotaur – half man, half bull – which is then placed in the labyrinth and fed virgins to keep it happy. Along comes Theseus who, with the help of Ariadne and her thread, kills the Minotaur and finds his way back out of the labyrinth.
A more positive figure is found in Hephaestus, husband of Aphrodite. He is the divine artisan, crafting beautiful objects in his forge with great skill. He even made several gold mechanical women to help out around his workshop, as well as three-legged tables with wheels which can go off on errands on their own.
