When Neptune transits natal Mercury your need for transcendence and imagination influences how you think and express your ideas. Neptune inspires new dreams and dissolves old structures and represents your need to spiritualise and refine this area of your life.

When Neptune transits natal Mercury you may experience inspiration and confusion with your thinking, communication, and perception of reality, and in your daily interactions with neighbours and siblings, and in trips around your local neighbourhood. This transit helps to balance your rational and logical thinking with your imagination, feelings and intuition if you work with its energies.
Your imagination and sensitivity to atmospheres is increased which allows you to think and communicate more creatively. You can channel this into creative work, such as writing, music, film, photography, and so on, or use it to improve any area of your life. Your perceptions could become more subtle and you may receive insights and intuitive breakthroughs that enhance your understanding of reality.
You may experience increased sensitivity to light, sound, touch, and smell which could be overwhelming at times. This could create health problems with your nervous system that may be emotional or psychosomatic, or you could have trouble sleeping. If you become hypersensitive and overwrought you may need to learn to relax and downregulate your nervous system.
Hard aspects to Mercury (conjunction, square and opposition) could be more challenging as the boundaries of your mind dissolve. Your thinking could become chaotic and disorganised leading to confusion and mistakes, as well as dishonesty and dissembling, either deliberate or accidental. There could be problems with your mail, email, phone or internet connection, or difficulties with contracts. So check everything carefully and get somebody else to help with the details, especially numbers and form-filling.
Your mind could be overwhelmed by your feelings making you prone to self-deception and delusions. You may spend a lot of time daydreaming or away with the fairies and become lost in fantasies, both positive and negative. Or you could escape into drugs or alcohol or other forms of escapism like watching movies or playing computer games all day.
You may lose your sense of direction and get lost, either literally while out and about, or generally in your life. You may feel confused about where your life is heading or feel tired mentally and/or physically. This could descend into a depression or breakdown and you may benefit from talking to a good therapist who can guide you back to reality.
But you may need to allow yourself time to drift and be lost while your mind turns inward and reorganises itself. You can explore what your feelings are trying to reveal through your jumbled thoughts and dreams and find your way back to clarity and a new path by listening to your intuition. Just remember to check your perceptions carefully before doing anything drastic or making big changes to your life. Your intuition could be inconsistent so get advice from somebody you trust who is grounded in reality and common sense.

My Notes:
I was born with Neptune sextile Mercury so the first transit was the square to my natal Mercury in 1982-84, from age 12 to 14, when Neptune was in Sagittarius in my 11th house. This coincided with when I started high school and was playing lots of music on the piano and with various orchestras on the flute.
The first exact alignment of this transit happened at the end of the first term when I was moved into a new class. The school was arranged into three bands based on intelligence with the X-band at the top. I’d been placed into the middle band but by the end of the first term my grades were straight A’s so they shifted me up to the X-band.
However, that meant I had a whole term of Latin to learn over the Christmas holiday. It also meant that my grades suddenly dropped from A’s to C’s and D’s because I was being compared with kids smarter than me and was no longer top of the class. This knocked my confidence and made me think I was stupid and might be why I put all my energy into doing music because I believed I couldn’t do anything else.
Later in the transit I visited a recording studio for the first time and was inspired by the flashing lights and complicated-looking equipment. I knew with an intuitive certainty that this was where I belonged and my dream of becoming a sound engineer was born.
Neptune transited trine my natal Mercury in 1996-98, from age 25 to 27, when Neptune was in Capricorn in my 12th house. This coincided with the restoration of my confidence when my dream of being a sound engineer became real. The transit started in the final year of the course I took in music production to learn my trade.
After graduating I worked in a studio recording local bands, which was great fun as well as incredibly hard work. Unfortunately, there wasn’t enough work to go around so by the end of the transit I was working part-time in crappy office admin jobs to pay the bills. It wasn’t until Neptune was trine my Uranus (and sextile the MC) in 2001 that I got a full-time job as a sound engineer.
Neptune is transiting opposite my natal Mercury in 2023-25, from age 52 to 54, while Neptune is in Pisces in my 2nd house. This is a current transit and part of the mini triangle configuration and I’m not coping well. It started out okay but true to Neptune, my illusions are being revealed – it’s quite a saga:
As the transit faded in, I was suffering under the illusion that I could grow my business and was filled with ideas and dreams and working towards making them real. But then the traffic to this site suddenly tanked when Google changed an algorithm and it became clear that I needed to rethink the feasibility of what I was doing.
I had been writing an enormous amount and by the end of 2023 was burnt out and exhausted on every level. My health imploded because I’d been eating the wrong things (to feed the insane writing schedule) and the inflammation wrecked my eyesight. I couldn’t use the computer and had to abandon the writing while I purged the crap from my system and healed.
While dealing with this self-inflicted stupidity the anti-social noise from my neighbours suddenly increased and I was bombarded with loud music playing non-stop for days and into the night, often loud enough to literally shake the windows in their frames. It took months to get it under some kind of control, although it still flares up occasionally now.
The noise pushed me into an extreme state of distress. I was deranged from lack of sleep and couldn’t think straight. My mind and nervous system were out of control and I was practically hallucinating. There were other problems too, including issues with my finances due to mistakes by other people when I was least able to cope with it.
But I’ve also been reconnecting with my spiritual practice and learning to let go as I deal with the feelings of grief and loss that have been coming up. These mostly relate to the aborted dark night process that I need to finish, reinforced by other transits like Neptune opposite my Pluto and Pluto square my Jupiter. It’s probably these that made the experience so intense in recent months.
It’s no fun being smacked in the face by reality and I’m not out of the woods yet. I may report back when the transit is over – if I’m not in a padded cell by then…!

I have Venus 7 Pisces, Sun 15 Pisces, Mercury 28 Pisces and Moon 6 Aries. The past 10 years has been all about dissolving, dissolving… and I guess I’m in for a bit more with my moon. It’s so disorienting. Thank you for this information!

I have an astrology blog and I was also hit by the algorithm update in 2023/2024. 80% down in visitors and views. Brutal. I’m about to begin my Neptune square mercury transit now. I hope no more bad news for my site
