Mars retrograde in Gemini – some historical context

Last week we explored the Mars in Gemini transit. Here are a few more rambling thoughts that didn’t quite fit in that post…

To get a feel for what to expect with the coming Mars retrograde in Gemini, you can start by looking back at what happened last time. The last time Mars was retrograde in Gemini was at the end of 2007 into 2008 during the financial crisis of the Credit Crunch. This retrograde was slightly different because it started in Cancer and then went back into Gemini.

Interestingly, it also coincided with the start of Pluto moving into Capricorn. Now in 2022 to 2023 we have another Mars retrograde in Gemini just as Pluto reaches the end of Capricorn and starts shifting into Aquarius. It happens at around the same time of year too.

The previous Mars retrograde cycle in Gemini started in August 2007 when Mars entered Gemini on 7th. It moved through the entire sign and entered Cancer on 28th September 2007 and stationed retrograde in Cancer on 15th November. Mars went retrograde into Gemini on 31st December 2007 and stationed direct on 31st January 2008, re-entering Cancer on 4th March 2008.

Pluto entered Capricorn for the first time on 26th January 2008, just before Mars stationed direct, and it stayed there until 15th June when it dipped back into Sagittarius. It re-entered Capricorn on 27th November 2008 and will dip into Aquarius for a couple of months on 23rd March 2023, two days before Mars finally leaves Gemini.

So Mars in Gemini carried us across the threshold of Pluto in Capricorn in 2008, and will carry us out again and into Aquarius next year. It will be interesting to watch events over the coming months for echoes and historical rhymes.

Last time the recession had already begun in 2007 with the subprime mortgage crisis, and it deepened into 2008 when stock markets plunged into the Great Recession and the Lehman Brothers filed for bankruptcy later in the year.

The main culprit for the start of the economic crash in 2007-8 was the Saturn Neptune opposition which ran from 2006-7 with Saturn in Leo and Neptune in Aquarius. Saturn Neptune popped the illusory bubble that anyone could own a house and the bad debt hidden within the dodgy loans imploded. Neptune has a history of creating and popping bubbles, although any of the outer planets can do this when teamed up with Saturn.

The Saturn Neptune opposition ended when Saturn entered Virgo in September 2007 and started moving towards an opposition to Uranus in Pisces. The Saturn Uranus opposition became exact in November 2008, and by the end of the following year Saturn was square Pluto in the final quarter of the cycle that ended in 2020.

This is the context for what is coming next. The bubble that popped in the crash of 2008 was reinflated over the following years and everyone carried on as if nothing had happened. The globalists continued with their plans to consolidate their wealth and power and grew more complacent and arrogant by the day.

“Best viewed with red hot fury in your heart”

But then along came the Uranus Pluto square (2012-15) and the pushback began as allegiances slowly shifted away from the ‘West’ and the post-war Bretton Woods power structure started to crack. Then in 2016 Trump and Brexit happened and the globalists lost their collective shit.

They accelerated their plans in 2020 (Saturn Pluto conjunction) because the system was falling apart. It looks like they’re trying to outrun the entropy of the system collapsing, as if getting their ducks in a row faster will help them to survive the coming tsunami.

We are witnessing the end of the global monetary system and the end of ‘Western’ imperialist land grabs and empire building – if only the globalists would realise it. The illusion and lies are crumbling and will accelerate when Mars stations retrograde in Gemini at the end of October. The chaos and dissolution will continue into 2023 and may not peak until the Saturn Neptune conjunction in Aries in 2025-26.

We have a long struggle ahead as we transition into a new world on the other side of the collapse. For more on the larger context of this crisis read these posts: Notes on Apocalypse: WTF is going on?! and Forthcoming Cycles and Transits 2022 – 2032

  1. It is very refreshing to find a knowledgeable astrologer who also understands what’s really going on in the financial markets. It is rare.

  2. Nice points Jessica, thank you. Interesting how Mars in Gemini prepares the way again for Pluto’s ingress in Aquarius. I can’t wait for the plutonic wheels to turn in Spring 2023 and see what it all leads to.
