Outer Planets Triangle 2024–28 and Transiting Midpoints

Last year we had a brief look at the mini triangle configuration that is forming between the three outermost planets, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto. This configuration is incredibly significant and represents a major turning point in the history of civilisation. In this series, we’ll explore what this means on a collective level as well as how it might work in your personal chart. But we start by exploring the history of these alignments.

The current outer planets triangle (or minor grand trine) will be formed by Pluto in Aquarius trine Uranus in Gemini with Neptune sextile both from the midpoint in Aries. It began moving into position in 2022 and will remain in orb until 2028, after which the individual aspects will start to fade in and out until the end of the decade. It reaches its closest alignment between 2025 and 2027 when it forms three close alignments.

As we saw in the overview post, this mini triangle is also called a transiting midpoint which happens when the three outermost planets align with one of them equidistant from the other two. These are rare alignments which happen two or three times a century, usually with either Uranus or Pluto at the midpoint. Uranus midpoints are the most common because Uranus moves the fastest of the three.

An even rarer alignment is the transiting grand trine where all three outer planets are trine each other. These happen once every 500 years and the last one was in 1770–75 during the American War of Independence and early industrial revolution in Europe.

Another rare alignment is the type we have now with Neptune at the midpoint or apex. These also only happen once every 500 years and the last time was in the early 1500s at the birth of the modern world.

In this post on the fascinating 500 Year Party blog, he says that all transiting midpoints signify change, with Pluto midpoints being more transformational. But the Neptune midpoints show the most far-reaching change because it stretches through the next 500 years. However, it’s not easy to predict what will happen during these times, as he explains:

“Midpoints involving the three outer planets occur at most three times a century and… indicate a major change in the zeitgeist of society, one so great that it can be called a ‘Soft Coup.’ People who come of age after the midpoint do not realise that the world was ever different than what they know and others soon forget that the world was once different, so that they begin to accept the new reality as having always been the fact.”

He goes on to say that:

“Once you forget that the zeitgeist has changed and believe that things have always been as they are now, you also come to believe that things can’t change, that they will always be like they are now.”

This is why it’s so hard to predict the future because people tend to just project the present forward and assume everything will continue along the same lines. The current Neptune midpoint is likely to produce a lot of wild imaginings about the future, most of which will never happen – at least, not in the way we assume.

To see where we might be heading it can help to look back at how we got here. There were three midpoints in the 20th century leading us to where we are now – two Uranus midpoints and one Pluto midpoint.

The first midpoint happened in 1903–5 when Uranus was opposite both Neptune and Pluto who were still close to their conjunction of 1891–93. This was when Pluto was in Gemini and Neptune was in Cancer while Uranus was at the midpoint at the end of Sagittarius and early Capricorn. It was a time of huge change around the world with the rise of revolutionary social movements in the West as well as Russia and China.

There were also technological innovations and breakthroughs in science that changed the way we live, including aeroplanes and cars, quantum physics, psychoanalysis and depth psychology. Film and radio continued to develop and improve and we saw the birth of modernism in art and music as the old order was swept away.

The second midpoint happened in 1942–46 when Uranus was in Gemini trine Neptune in Libra with Pluto sextile both at the midpoint in Leo. This is similar to the current midpoint because Uranus was in the same sign while Neptune and Pluto were in signs opposite to where they are now.

The changes during this time were transformative and traumatic as it coincided with the second half of World War Two just after Pearl Harbour brought the US into the conflict. Germany surrendered in May 1945 but the war in the Pacific didn’t end until August when two atomic bombs were dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in Japan. Along with nuclear power, the war also enabled the development of the first computer.

This period marked the end of Britain’s dominance of the financial markets and the centre of power shifted to the US as the world was reordered after the war. The UN and the World Bank were established and the Cold War began between the West and the Soviet Union. Civil war also began in China and the world entered the Great Acceleration – a period of unprecedented growth.

Pluto midpoint in 1945

The third midpoint happened in 1977–79 when Pluto was in Libra sextile Neptune in Sagittarius with Uranus semi-sextile both at the midpoint in Scorpio. This was part of the long sextile in the Neptune Pluto cycle that’s been running on and off since the 1940s bringing the rise of mass movements, environmentalism, and a globalised culture.

This midpoint coincided with the energy and oil crises of the 70s which led to blackouts and rising prices. There were multiple strikes by workers in the UK in the Winter of Discontent, followed by Margaret Thatcher becoming PM. She embraced neoliberalism and deregulated the markets, overthrowing the old financial order. Neoliberalism is fuelled by debt and relies on mass unemployment, inequality and poverty so it had some dire consequences.

There was also innovation in the form of the space shuttle and the neutron bomb, as well as breakthroughs in genetics and the first ‘test tube’ baby, and the discovery of Chiron and the rings of Uranus. The first home computers also went on sale.

Uranus midpoint in 1979

The development of neoliberalism and computing are also both related to the 200-year air cycle of Jupiter Saturn conjunctions which was foreshadowed in 1980 and began in 2020. It’s not difficult to see the trajectory we’ve been on since then as we grapple with rising debt and the breakdown of society.

The start of the air cycle marks another major turning point of inevitable change that’s reinforced by the current Neptune midpoint. Not only is this a rare 500-year event, it’s also happening as all three outer planets change signs while near the start of their cycles with each other so they’re in their waxing phases. (More on this here)

It also begins with the midpoint at the start of the zodiac, a significant point that represents a new beginning (and ending). The first close alignment of the mini triangle in 2025 happens when Neptune is at 0–1° Aries. The fact that Saturn will also be there raises the stakes considerably and marks a powerful moment of change that will affect the whole world.

However, the epicentre of that change may be the US because the Saturn Neptune conjunction falls on the IC of the US chart, which represents the roots or foundation of the country. (More on this here)

All of these pivotal moments coming together at the same time mean that we’ve reached the end of the old order and are about to embark on a new era in history. The Neptune midpoint represents a huge shift in perspective in how we see ourselves and organise civilisation and culture.

But it’s very hard to predict what will happen because we simply can’t imagine how things could change. It’s almost guaranteed NOT to unfold the way we think it will. To imagine the possibilities we need to look at how these rare 500-year Neptune midpoints usually work on a collective level.

So in the next post we’ll explore the history of Neptune midpoints over the centuries…

  1. Also, Robert Reich’s newsletter today – The Stunning Rebirth of the American Labor Movement – could be seen as an earnest of what this configuration might initiate.🐈‍⬛

  2. Thanks for this. That 500 year cycle from the 1500s also marks the rise of the printing press, mass literacy & education and the equalising dissemination of information. I wonder if this configuration marks a move away from the anachronistic hierarchical structuring of our educational institutions and mass media. If so, this could be seen as a culmination of the desire by medieval philosophers and those of the Enlightenment for an actualisation of an individual’s sovereign spiritual Self.
