When Uranus transits natal Uranus your need for change influences your desire for independence and freedom from the past. Uranus speeds things up and disrupts old patterns and forms a regular cycle of transits to its own natal placement that unfolds as you grow and change.

When Uranus transits natal Uranus you may experience surprises, disruption and reversals in relation to the house position of your natal Uranus as well as transiting Uranus. These transits break down structures that no longer serve the expression of your individuality and create room for you to continue growing. They also reveal new potentials that you can develop as an individual in relation to society.
The Uranus cycle takes 84 years to complete and works closely with Saturn’s transits to its own placement in building your sense of self and a workable structure for your life. The first sextile happens in your early teens around the same time as the Saturn opposition and marks the challenges of adolescence and figuring out who you want to be.
The first square happens in your early 20s at the start of your young adult life when you want to be independent and define yourself as an individual. It may be a rebellious phase when you break free of your parent’s values or get involved in ideologies and social causes. You may also leave home and go to college or start work, or get married, or have your first child.
If you repress the need to be true to yourself at this time, you may set yourself up for a larger crisis that will peak at the opposition at midlife. But you can make necessary changes at the first trine in your late 20s which happens close to the Saturn return. This is when you’re becoming a fully responsible adult and is a chance to see if you’ve left yourself room to grow and change as you get older.
The opposition or Uranus half-return happens in your late 30s to early 40s just before the second Saturn opposition and is a major turning point in your life. This is the official midlife crisis, although it doesn’t have to be a crisis – it depends how you’ve handled the process of change until now.
There may be reversals of situations in your life and unlived or unexpressed parts of your being could return into consciousness. You may discover potentials, talents, or dreams that you haven’t developed, or find new perspectives that take your life in a different direction. How disruptive this is will depend on how true you’ve been to yourself and how much you’ve denied or repressed in order to fit in or get along in society.
If you don’t deal with this crisis now the same issues could come up again at the second trine in your late 50s just before the second Saturn return at 59. This is when you should feel more able to be true to yourself if you made the necessary changes to your life at the opposition. You may want to try new things and experiment and ponder how you’d like to spend the rest of your life.
The second square happens in your early 60s when you’re dealing with the aging process and becoming an elder. This is an opportunity to define yourself more clearly and decide how you’d like to continue growing into old age as you approach the end of your working life. By the second sextile at about age 70 you can look at your life as a whole and assess whether it’s a true reflection of who you feel yourself to be.
Finally, the conjunction or Uranus return at age 84 marks the end of the cycle and the start of a new one. This is a good time to ponder questions about the meaning of your life and explore what you’ve learned. There might be things you’d still like to do while you’re alive and you can also take this time to put your affairs in order so you can relax and enjoy the rest of your life.
Possibilities with Uranus transiting Uranus:
- Reflecting on your life and achievements
- Reassessing your needs as an individual
- A new vision of the future
- Challenging the status quo
- Discovering new ideas and perspectives
Watch out for:
- Sudden collapse of structures
- Sudden job loss or divorce
- Classic midlife crisis silliness
- Mindless rebellion
- Trying to avoid change
My notes:
Uranus transited square to my natal Uranus in 1990 from age 19–20 when Uranus was in Capricorn in my 11th house. This transit coincided with when I left home and moved to the other end of the country to Newcastle to study on the Graduate Diploma course for jazz and popular music.
There was lots of socialising and new people but being away from my family unleashed something in me that had been locked away for a long time. The ‘real’ me was about to make a comeback. It was a period of rapid and unpredictable change that forced me to rethink my whole identity as a musician but also as a human being.
I was plunged into a psychotic breakdown that reached its peak after this transit had passed thanks to other transits at the time, including progressed Sun conjunct Pluto, Saturn and Neptune entering my 12th house, Pluto opposing natal Saturn, and Uranus square natal Chiron.
Uranus transited trine to my natal Uranus in 1997-98 from age 26–27 when Uranus was in Aquarius in my 12th house and getting close to crossing my ascendant. This was when I was working as a sound engineer at a project studio in Newcastle recording local bands and having a great time living my dream. I’d wanted to be a sound engineer since I was 13.
Unfortunately, there wasn’t enough work to go around between all the engineers so I had to find another way to earn some money. Towards the end of this transit I did a training course for business admin skills that would make it easier for me to apply for shitty office jobs. This wasn’t enjoyable and it didn’t make me feel more free or authentic but it was a necessary reversal.
Uranus transited opposite to my natal Uranus in 2012-13 from age 41–42 when Uranus was in Aries in my 2nd house. This transit coincided with when I was unemployed after losing my job in 2011. Since a year had passed and I was still jobless, I was put onto the DWP Work Programme, as it was then, and it officially began when this transit was exact for the first time.
The whole thing was so depressing and oppressive (and frankly, patronising) that I was frantic to ‘sign off’ as soon as possible. They seemed to have had the same idea as they were encouraging people to go self-employed even if they didn’t have a hope in hell of making any money. I still had some redundancy pay left so decided to take the plunge and went freelance as a writer just as this transit ended.
Uranus will transit trine to my natal Uranus again in 2027-28 from age 56–57 when Uranus is in Gemini and entering my 4th house. It will conjunct my IC at the same time as this transit. This is an approaching transit and part of the mini triangle configuration – I may update this later…
