The Astrology of 2024

Congratulations for making it to the end of 2023! We have more of the same coming for 2024 as we transition into the middle of the decade when everything changes. It’s too early to say what those changes will look like and it’ll probably be a messy combination of good and bad, as per usual. The coming year provides an opportunity to prepare, as well as support for navigating the end of an era. But that doesn’t mean it’ll be easy. Here are the main events for 2024:

In 2024 we continue to float around in confusion with Saturn and Neptune in Pisces as they get closer to their conjunction in Aries in 2025–26 when everything will change. Pluto reaches the end of Capricorn and enters Aquarius for good by the end of the year. So now is your last chance to finish dealing with any issues that Pluto brought up in the Capricorn area of your chart.

This is also the last full year of Uranus in Taurus and Neptune in Pisces as they get ready to shift into new signs in 2025. The outer planets are now settling into their mini triangle configuration that stays for the rest of the decade, with Uranus trine Pluto and Neptune sextile both Uranus and Pluto from the middle. More on this momentous event here.

All the exact alignments in 2024 are with Jupiter, including his conjunction with Uranus in Taurus in April. This should be a mostly positive event but could also indicate extreme volatility and unpredictable events in the financial markets and with inflation. Then in May, Jupiter enters Gemini and gets everybody talking and probably polarising and arguing – it may be hard to notice any difference to normal!

The year ends with an egregious transit of Mars going retrograde in Leo opposite Pluto. Because Mars slows down prior to his station, the opposition to Pluto remains in orb for three months from 14th October 2024 to 22nd January 2025. There’ll be one exact hit this year on 3rd November, two days before the US election, then another on 3rd January 2025 when Mars is retrograde. There’s more detail on this in the Preview post.

Mars Pluto alignments are incredibly challenging with the potential for intense power struggles and volatile emotions that could be dangerous on a personal and collective level. We could see extreme violence, rage and power grabs around the world with the use of emergency powers, deep state shenanigans and underhand actions, as well as extreme weather events and maybe even power cuts in some places.

As I said in the Preview post, it may be a good idea to get any important things done before October when Mars enters his retrograde shadow. But you can also use the Mars Pluto energies to make constructive changes to areas of your life that need to be reformed or regenerated.

Let’s look at the specifics for 2024…

Pluto in Aquarius

Pluto starts the year in Capricorn but enters Aquarius on 21st January 2024 and stays for several months until 2nd September when he dips back into Capricorn for a final goodbye. He enters Aquarius on 19th November 2024 where he stays for the next twenty years.

Pluto in Aquarius will transform the rules and social norms that bind society together, and the systems we live within that are shaped by our ideas about humanity. It will also transform how we use science and technology to manifest those ideas. How you participate in this social and technological revolution will depend on the house occupied by Aquarius in your chart.

Saturn in Pisces

Saturn has been in Pisces since March 2023 and stays until 25th May 2025 when he enters Aries. There’s some toggling back and forth between Pisces and Aries before the Saturn Neptune conjunction in Aries in 2025-26.

Saturn in Pisces is a good time to take a practical approach to creativity, imagination, spiritual practice, and helping others. You can ground your imagination in creative work or make a serious commitment to spiritual study and meditation, keep a dream diary, go on a retreat, dissolve negative unconscious patterns, and learn to surrender to something larger than yourself.

Jupiter in Gemini

Jupiter has been in Taurus since May 2023 and stays until 26th May 2024 when he enters Gemini and stays until June 2025 when he goes into Cancer.

Jupiter in Gemini encourages you to expand your mind and grow through the exchange of ideas and information. It brings growth to the Gemini area of your chart which may involve improving your thinking and communication and developing new skills and interests related to that area.

It’s a good time to open your mind to new ideas and see the world in a more optimistic and positive way. You may be very busy and ready to talk to anyone about anything. But try to remember to follow through on your big ideas and actually put them into practice otherwise you’ll have nothing to show for it by the end of the transit. More on Jupiter in Gemini later…

Main Alignments

The main alignments this year are all made by Jupiter, although the outer planets are moving into closer orbs in the alignments that will dominate the second half of this decade. For more on this, read these posts: Neptune Pluto Cycle, Uranus Neptune Cycle, and Uranus Pluto Cycle. There are five Jupiter alignments in 2024:

Jupiter conjunct Uranus

The Jupiter Uranus conjunction is at 21° Taurus on 21st April 2024, with an 8-degree orb from 2nd March to 5th June. It represents a period of change and breakthroughs in multiple areas and there may be revolutions in finance, agriculture, food production, and values, as well as technological innovation, social reform and radical political movements.

On a personal level, it represents an exciting new beginning in the Taurus area of your chart which may bring sudden opportunities, surprises and reversals in fortune. You could experience a breakthrough in almost any area where you’ve been stuck, especially if the conjunction aspects one or more of your personal planets.

Jupiter sextile Neptune

The Jupiter Neptune sextile is at 29° Taurus/Pisces on 23rd May 2024 with a 6-degree orb from 25th April to 20th June. It represents a period of growth and expansion of your ideals and desire for union with something larger than yourself and is a good time for meditation, spiritual practice, creativity, and relaxing on holiday or communing with nature.

Your dreams may be inspiring and you feel optimistic and hopeful for the future. Take this opportunity to explore the spiritual and creative side of yourself and you should find good fortune and growth in the Taurus and Pisces areas of your chart. However, since this is a sextile you will have to make an effort to get the most out of it.

Jupiter trine Pluto

The Jupiter Pluto trine is at 1° Gemini/Aquarius on 3rd June 2024, with a 6-degree orb from 9th May to 27th June. It represents a period of harmonious balance between your need for growth and your desire for transformation and is a good time to work towards your goals without going overboard with your ambitions.

You can transform any area of your life that needs reform, as well as turn this energy inwards and transform yourself. You can deepen your understanding of yourself and life and turn this increased self-acceptance into success. The only warning is to watch for power struggles and arrogance but since this is a trine, you should be able to make positive use of the energies.

Jupiter square Saturn

The Jupiter Saturn square forms two exact alignments this year at 17° and 14° Gemini/Pisces on 19th August and 24th December respectively, with an 8-degree orb starting from 15th June. It remains in orb for the rest of the year and into 2025 when there’s a final exact aspect in June 2025 when Jupiter is in Cancer and Saturn is in Aries.

This represents a period of conflict between your need for growth and expansion and your need for limitation and responsibility which will test anything that you began during the conjunction or the sextile last year. Now is the time to rethink anything that isn’t working as you’re challenged to take a realistic approach to achieving your goals.

Saturn can also help to give form to your visions of the future. By taking a practical approach, you can work towards making your dreams real and develop greater faith and confidence in your ability to succeed and improve your life.

Jupiter sextile Chiron

The Jupiter Chiron sextile forms two exact alignments this year at 21° and 20° Gemini/Aries on 12th October and 2nd November respectively, with a 6-degree orb from 18th August 2024 to 2nd January 2025. There’s a final exact aspect in May 2025.

This represents a period of healing and optimism that expands your desire for healing by bringing awareness to your wounds so you can let them go. This won’t necessarily be easy as the pain of the past comes back into your consciousness, but Jupiter can put it into a larger perspective. By cultivating positive beliefs you can release the past and develop an optimistic view that brings healing. However, because this is a sextile, you will need to make an effort to get the most out of it.

Moon Nodes in 2024

This year the eclipse cycle continues on the Aries/Libra axis with the North Node in Aries and the South Node in Libra. This cycle began in July 2023 and runs until 11th January 2025 when the axis shifts into Pisces/Virgo. We get one eclipse from this new cycle in September although the nodes are still in Aries and Libra. Here are the dates for the eclipses for 2024:

  • Annular Lunar Eclipse at 5° Libra on 25th March
  • Total Solar Eclipse at 19° Aries on 8th April
  • Partial Lunar Eclipse at 25° Pisces on 18th September
  • Annular Solar Eclipse at 10° Libra on 2nd October

With the nodes in Aries and Libra there could be an increase in aggression and the desire for independence, sovereignty and self-rule, leading to more wars between nations and fighting in general. It could exacerbate any conflict, producing more anger, protests and rioting, and perhaps less inclination towards finding diplomatic solutions and harmony.

The North Node in Aries increases your desire to be yourself and the need for assertion, adventure, excitement and movement. You may want to achieve something for yourself but could also be confused about what you want and how to get it. The South Node in Libra reveals the relationship issues that need to be released or healed, such as too much co-dependency or compromise that makes you inauthentic.

You may find the house axis is more relevant to your experience than the signs. Check your chart to see if any of the eclipses activate important points in your horoscope.

Retrogrades in 2024

This year we only have Mars and Mercury going retrograde, along with the usual retrogrades from the slower moving planets. Venus will next go retrograde in March 2025 when she’s in Aries and Pisces.

Mars stations retrograde in Leo on 6th December 2024 and goes back into Cancer early in January 2025. The entire cycle runs from October 2024 until May 2025, and as we’ve already mentioned, Mars opposes Pluto through much of this time. Here are the dates for your diary:

  • 5 October 2024: enters retrograde shadow at 17° Cancer
  • 6 December 2024: stations retrograde at 6° Leo
  • 16 January 2025: Sun opposite Mars at 26° Capricorn/Cancer
  • 24 February 2025: stations direct at 17° Cancer
  • 2 May 2025: leaves retrograde shadow at 6° Leo

When Mars stations retrograde your energy levels may go down as it turns inwards and away from being invested in worldly goals. You might begin to doubt yourself or feel unclear about what you want or how to achieve your desires. Now is the time to re-evaluate goals and how you take action in your life. You can assess how you’re getting on with various projects and initiatives and make necessary changes.

  1. Thank you for putting this together!

The Pluto in Aquarius transit is in the same house as my Lilith and Saturn (3rd/4th house cusp, Cap/Aquarius). This year is also the end of my (first) Saturn return, whew. My inner witch has hit the ground running and we’re only five days into the new year lol!

Very excited though, especially with those Jupiter transits. This year is supposed to be the “finale” from what I read, before the societal/cultural *revolution* (however that plays out).

    Happy New Year!
