Saturn Transits: 1st House

When Saturn transits the First House the need for security and achievement influences how you present yourself to the world and take action. This is the start of a new cycle as Saturn transits through the houses in the lower hemisphere of your chart, encouraging you to develop inner strength and come to know yourself better.

When Saturn crosses your ascendant and enters the 1st house you’ll have to face the reality of who you are and how you present yourself to the world. You might experience the consequences of past actions in a way that brings you down to earth and forces you to take responsibility for yourself and your choices. You may feel insecure as old appearances are stripped away and you’re challenged to be true to yourself.

This is a time of establishing order and building new structures in your life following the dissolution of Saturn’s transit through your 12th house. These two transits mark a period of crisis and rebirth when your personality structure is rebuilt so you can become who you’re meant to be. It’s an opportunity to become more realistic about who you are by getting feedback from others and making practical changes to your life.

You may have to face up to reality in some way, or grow up and become more mature, stop taking things for granted, or deal with a situation that you’ve been avoiding. If Saturn’s transit through the 12th caused some sort of collapse or loss, then now will be a time for healing and rehabilitation, building strength, and discovering new insights into who you want to become.

You may feel more open and vulnerable as you turn inwards and become more self-aware. It’s a time of increased soul-searching and self-discovery, being more independent, and learning to trust your deeper Self and its natural sense of timing and direction. Take your time and ask for guidance from within. This is about becoming the kind of person you want to be, but you may also realise there are karmic pressures on you to become who you must be. The circumstances of your life make it clear that you can’t have or be certain things, so this transit can be about accepting the reality of the person that you are.

If there’s a mismatch between who you are on a soul level and the way you live your life, you’re likely to experience difficulties until you come into alignment and establish your true values. Big changes may have happened when Saturn was in your 12th, but now you must build a new persona that reflects your true Self. If you re-create your old self-image it will just fall apart under pressure later because it’s no longer viable.

You may also experience physical changes or choose to change your appearance in some way to reflect your new sense of self. You might find it easier to lose weight, for example. It can also be a good time to build a stronger body and physique through a disciplined exercise regime. However, your energy levels may also be lower than normal, forcing you to conserve energy and to only do what’s strictly necessary. Don’t waste time or energy on things that no longer matter to you, but don’t just sit about either. It’s possible to grow in health and confidence through this transit and boost your energy through an improved diet and healthy living.

While Saturn moves through the 1st house you may feel unsure of yourself and confused about what to do. But don’t be tempted to fall back onto old patterns of behaviour if you feel lost or insecure. The test here is to be true to yourself, not to hide behind your fears and doubts. If you don’t make the necessary changes now, your problems will be even worse the next time Saturn passes this way.

Possibilities with Saturn transiting the 1st:
  • Soul-searching and life review
  • Introspection and self-discovery
  • Undergoing therapy
  • Improving health through discipline
  • Finding new ambitions and goals
Watch out for:
  • Low energy and tiredness
  • Illness or health crisis
  • Failures in work or business
  • Burdened by onerous responsibilities
  • Feeling insecure and withdrawn

This transit marks the start of a process of becoming more self-directed and self-sufficient. You want to become something and will begin to actively work towards making that a reality. You may be full of aspirations and ambitions for the future, and may feel guided towards doing specific things. You might begin to work on a project, or study a new subject, interest or hobby that becomes important to you later in life.

Now is a time of planting seeds for a new cycle of growth because the planet of ambition is in the house of new beginnings. This is especially true if your previous goals and ambitions fell apart during Saturn’s transit through your 12th house. Now you can take responsibility for yourself and become a more whole individual by building your self-confidence and doing whatever is necessary to create a life that reflects the real you.

  1. I and many others will benefit from your practical and encouraging words … thanks! Despite the fact that I am fond of astrology from, I constantly remind myself that the planets continue their cycles, and that we all, I hope, will develop thanks to this experience.

  2. hi, I lost my job with Saturn in my 12th house in sagitarius last year after 14 years, it came by surprise even if i need to admit was not happy with it. Saturn is now entering my 1st in Capricorn opposite my sun in Cancer (6°), I still have no idea what i am going to do next and every attempt to find a job lately is not working so far. I am even considering studyng again for one year as I dont want to stay and do nothing…I hope next year will be better but saturn will make a square to Uranus then will conjunct my moon in Capricorn which migt be a tought time.. lastly Uranus will move in my house 4th opposite my MC, i am not exepecting great successes soon

    1. Hi Laurent – it might take a little while before things begin to change for you. Saturn transits often feel like they’re moving really slowly and it’s frustrating. The square to Uranus might be challenging but it’s an opportunity to make creative changes, so if you’re willing to put the effort in, you might be surprised at what you can achieve. And when Uranus crosses into your 4th house, it could bring sudden changes to your career. So hang in there and don’t give up!

      1. thanls Jessica, I forgot to say that when URanus will croos into my 4th in 2019, it will also make a trine to my Jupiter which is on the asc and a sextile to my Sun which is on my descendant, so maybe this will help me make new srtart

    2. It is eerie reading this–i lost my job with Saturn in Saggitarius, my 12th, four months before it entered Capricorn which is my rising sign too. However the job was as a journalist (kinda related to Saggitarius!) and very unsustainable for me. I had been working towards it for the past four years because I was good at it and I felt everyone around me expected me to do it, and ignoring the fact that it wasn’t going to give me the work-life balance I wanted. Long story short, I collapsed because of this and because of various other issues in my life and past that I never dealt with. Since around the time Saturn entered my first I have been working on only doing what I REALLY want to do. Financially i am still in terrible shape two years later and it’s quite stressful, I have mental health problems that worsened as a result of the job and are keeping me from working at the moment and I doubt I will financially recover for a while. (My Saturn is in Aquarius so i’m due for my first Saturn return in the next few years too!)
All that said, I’m grateful for Saturn. It is stripping away the bullshit I lived with, forcing me to retreat and examine my real priorities, and put them and nothing else at front and centre. If anyone else is going through the same thing, I encourage you to just ride it out because it’ll be done when it’s done. Pushing for the life you had just makes it worse–i had several mental health setbacks after trying to freelance again before I finally admitted to myself it wasnt going to work. Take the time to learn what lessons you can about yourself. I am learning more about who I am and am not. I am making huge strides in emotional healing, learning to express myself healthily, and dealing with all the anger I was taught to repress since I was a child.
When the only things Saturn cuts are crappy things that were going to collapse anyway, you can’t be too upset at it. It’s like getting mad at the council for condemning your house because it’s about to fall down and full of rats, and you want to stay living in squalor. If you just let them knock it down you can build something better. That building takes time. It sucks. But it’ll be better. Best of luck.
