Saturn Transits: 9th House

When Saturn transits the Ninth House the need for security and achievement influences how you search for meaning, truth and self-development. Now is the time to build a working philosophy of life based on your experience, particularly what you’ve been through since Saturn crossed the descendent and entered your 7th house.

When Saturn transits the 9th house you’ll need to assess everything you’ve learned so far and make any changes that feel necessary. This is about assimilating all your previous experiences and creating a set of principles that you can live by. You’re searching for a system of meaning or belief, a philosophy of life, a set of morals and ethics, or a process of self-improvement that actually works for you as an individual.

Saturn will encourage you to investigate and face your ultimate beliefs and test them against reality to see if they serve your highest goals. These beliefs may be religious or philosophical, but could also be metaphysical, legal, or social theories. Whatever you believe, you need to define it for yourself because these are the ideals and principles that will guide your life from this point on and help you to decide what to do. This is especially important if your experience of Saturn in the 8th was particularly hard on you.

Everything that you’ve been through and learned can now be transformed into wisdom. You’ll take your beliefs more seriously and may commit yourself to new goals in line with your more mature perspective on life. Obviously this depends on how old you are when Saturn enters this house and what your aspirations are.

The danger with this transit is that you’ll be tempted to adopt a belief system ‘off the peg’ or blindly follow an orthodox religion without questioning or determining for yourself whether it’s right for you. What you believe must honestly reflect who you are. You must find what fits naturally with your individual path – which may or may not include orthodox religion and practices.

Don’t be too quick to jump into a system of faith, especially if your 8th house experience left you feeling insecure or lost. Allow your understanding and wisdom to grow steadily and trust that the process of awakening will happen in its own way when you’re ready. Hiding behind rigid belief systems won’t protect you from the truth of your soul. This includes resistance to religion in the form of scepticism and atheism – scientific reductionism, in particular, is destructive to the real needs of your soul.

If you feel depressed or lost during this transit it’s a sign that your ego needs to let go of an outdated system of belief. You may need to continue the search for ideas that can help bring meaningful order to your life now that you’ve changed. A genuine spiritual path won’t crumble under the weight of reality, but if what you believe isn’t adequate to your needs, you may undergo a crisis of faith.

This transit is good for learning and studying and deepening your understanding of life. You might enter (or re-enter) higher education, or seek to broaden your horizons and perspective through travel. However, long distance travel may be stressful or problematic unless it’s undertaken for educational or mind expanding reasons. If you go somewhere just to lie in the sun and get drunk it probably won’t go as planned.

Possibilities with Saturn transiting the 9th:
  • Committing to a belief system
  • Pondering the meaning of life
  • Studying abroad
  • Mind expanding experiences in faraway lands
  • Writing, teaching, and publishing
Watch out for:
  • Loss of faith or spiritual crisis
  • Being a know-it-all
  • Legal difficulties (caused by arrogance)
  • Travel upsets and mishaps

Overall, this is a good time to develop your mind and you may want to share what you learn through teaching, writing, or publishing. You’re willing to work hard to express the knowledge you’ve gained and this can be a peak in the process of developing your self-awareness. If you don’t know who you are by now, you’ll have to wait until the start of the next cycle to find out, when Saturn crosses your ascendant.

Now is the time to take responsibility for what you believe because it has a profound influence on your relationship to the rest of humanity. It’s a time of preparation for when Saturn crosses the Midheaven and enters your 10th house because your beliefs will be tested then to see if they serve your highest potential. So whatever you do now will influence how that testing process plays out and your ambitions will depend on the ideals to which you commit yourself now.

(Personal note: while Saturn was in my 9th house I published my first novel which was a summation of all that I’d learned over the previous years. Read more here: Addled: Adventures of a Reluctant Mystic)

  1. What an extremely informative and well thought out article. The depth and the correlation to previous and upcoming transits is very helpful. Saturn has just crossed into my 9th before it went Rx and yes, when it was in the 8th it was an extremely difficult time. I will be mindful of your advice. Thank you!
